I got two sprint phones Friday via telesales. I order them through
telesales as the two local stores I went to were clueless about any
    questions I asked them.

I got the phones today, one of them started ringining within 30 seconds of
me turning it on. The perevious person that had this number must have been
some sort of dead beat as it was a collection agency. Two more collection
agencies called by the end of the first day.

I called Sprint looking to change the number. What I really wanted to do
was change both my numbers to consecutive numbers. The first sprint
customer service agent didnt understand what concectutive ment and after I
explained they said that "sprint doesnt have consecutive numbers." I hung
up and called right back to get someone else. The second rep said they
currently only have one number available in all of the 201 area code?

Could that be possible? Currently I have a 201-780-xxxx number and would
like to stay in that exchange since it is local to me in Jersey City...
Could they really only have one 201-780 number out of the 10,000 numbers in
that group? If so I guess my chances of getting two consecutive numbers
    would be slim to none.

Are 201-780 numbers in that short supply? I really want two consecutive
numbers as with number portabiltiy I fugure this will be the last cell phone
number for my wife and I till we move out of the state. With that in mind
two consecutive numbers is important to me.

    Any ideas?

Unfortunately in the New York City market, numbers are in a short supply
(have they overlapped the area codes yet?). When the reps are trying to
get a number, the system gives them a list of numbers to choose from,
sometimes its just one number that pops up, other times up to 6 numbers
    will pop up.

It is very possible that you have an older exchange (780) and most of
the other numbers have been used up, and what's left are the
non-consecutive and not-so-easy to remember numbers.

If Jersey City has an overlapped area code, I'd see if you can get 2
consecutive numbers (it will still be a local call if the number is
based in Jersey City), I think they've only been in place about a year
to a year and a half.

    Good luck.

They do have overlapping area codes here. But I would rather not have one
of them since verizon really hasnt started using them for landline phones so
no one really recoginizes the new are code.

With onlly 1-6 numbers coming up it might be very tough to get back to back
numbers. Even if they were available by the time the first number is
programed the second number might be gone.

Actually, yes, all of 201 is. In case you haven't noticed, New Jersey's
had an explosion in area codes in the past seven years. First, the
whole state was either 201 or 609 area code... then 908 was added. Then
908 was split with the 732 area code, the 609 area code with split with
856 and 201 was split with 973. And NOW, they are adding area codes
551, 848 and 862 to New Jersey in order to keep up with demand.

In your area, the 201 area code is being overlaid with area code 551. I
would cheack again with Sprint and see if they have consecutive numbers
in the 551 area code, and if they do, take them. They'll seem kinda
funny to people who are used to 201 numbers, but they will still be
local to the 201 area code.

    I did a search on telcodata.us and it listed AC 201 exchanges 344, 780
and 892 working off the Jersey City switch TTBONJ12CM5 Lucent5ESS. If
you come back with these other exchanges, you might get some
satisfaction. You probably won't get consecutive numbers as that can
only happen when a new AC opens with all #s available.
