Spoke to retention tonight. It wasn't a ruse, I really am thinking of
cancelling. I just moved from Michigan (where Sprint was my only
choice in national carriers) to Long Island, where I have lots of
choice. Since my contract is over, I wanted to see what Sprint would
offer me to stay. Since I'm a light user, my main goal was to get a
replacement phone (the battery on my trusty Samsung 8500 doesn't hold
a charge anymore, and it's probably not worth replacing the battery).
I also wanted to add a second phone and share the minutes.
Anyway, like I say, I'm a light user, always have the minimum plan.
Good payment history (auto debit) and a customer since 1996.
Anyway, here's what I was offered:
350 Anytime
Unlimited N/W 8:00
$120 credit for new phone
No activation on new phone
Second line at $20 (standard, I know)
Free Sanyo A460 for second line
I know the Anytime is probably light, but I don't use up my 200
minutes under my old plan anyway. Since I always carry the minimum
plan, I'm thinking this was pretty good, but am interested in any
feedback? Has anybody done better on new phone credit?

Not too bad of a plan offered for $35. I would maybe hope for fee
pcs-2-pcs minutes as well, but it sounds like a pretty solid offer. I
would definately compare it to other offerings in your area by other
providers however.
Also, are you sure its a Sanyo A460? I didn't think Sanyo phones had
letters in their model numbers. If it is a *Samsung* A460, its a crap
phone and I'd ask for something better.

Actually you probably should take the offer before someone at sprint
changes their mind and take back that offer. I've been trying to get
someone to give me a 2nd line on my plan for the past month, but to no
avail. (The standard is that they only let you do it on plans $40+ or
something like that.) That rep was being nice by offering you a 2nd
line on a $35 plan, even with the standard $20 additional fee.

Cingular only charges for 9.99 for second line, and they have good
"preferred" national plans that you can share.
I have a Sprint phone, but I'm going to cancel it next month because
Cingular made two offers for me in writing:

Yeah, sorry, I should have said that it was just my personal opinion. I
had an A460 for about a week and it could *never* hold a signal at my
house for more than a couple minutes at a time before dropping it and
going into searching mode. My Nokia 3585i (and previously, the 8100)
never had that problem and I always get good signal with them. I had
also read a lot of other negative reports about the A460 (and N400), so
I guess it is just a matter of how the phone works for you.
To the original poster, you can try out the A460 and see how it works
for you, but always be aware that you can return it within 14 days if
the quality is not up to your standards.

I've always liked Sprint, and I go back to the days when they had
no contracts. So a while ago I added a phone to my original plan. After a
few months Sprint asked ME if I wanted to go on to a one-year contract
because I could possibly do better (in other words, they engaged the
retention effort). This is what they gave me:
450 Anytime
500 PCS to PCS
2550 N&W from 8:00
Cost: $30/month
I took this plan with a one-year contract for both myself and my
wife. So there was almost no net change in the monthly bill, but we got
much more for the money.
There was no phone credit involved with this, because it wasn't
that kind of situation (we already each had phones that were fairly new).
At the time it was clear that while a $100+ phone credit would be nice,
we'd save more in the long run due to more more airtime.

yes, you're right, it's a Samsung A460. Funny about that phone, if
you read the review on phonescoop and on Amazon.com, it either gets 5
stars or no stars, it seems that the phone either works great or not
at all. Wonder if it's production lots, or if there's just a
threshold of signal it has to have, and service is all or nothing.
In any case, I cancelled the A460 and got a much better deal (see my
other post in this thread).

A bunch has changed since I posted yesterday.
I called and cancelled the second line, and with it, the free A460.
At first they wouldn't let me do it, then they would, then they
wouldn't, spoke to 3 reps, finally they agreed with my argument that I
had 14 days to cancel with or without a contract on the second line.
Anyway, I went to Radio Shack and got in on the $79/Samsung5300 deal
(which I read about here, thanks to whoever posted it), but I had to
go to a 2 year contract. They threw in some other stuff, too.
So here's what I wound up with. It may not be the greatest
minutes-wise, but it suits my needs, and takes care of my phone
problem (the 8500 whose battery won't hold a charge will be on the
second line, which is just an emergency phone for the car, and the car
charger still powers the phone).
350 Anytime
unlimited N/W 8:00
PCS to PCS
$120 credit for purchase of new phone
$35/month on a 2 year agreement
$20 for second line
$7 for Vision on second line (which is now my primary use phone)
Samsung5300 for $79
$30 for sync software
free data cable.
Unfortunately, the $79 Samsung deal ends today.
thanks to all for the input, I'm pretty happy. I made a call on the
5300 and it blows away the 8500, which I was pretty satisfied with
until the battery stopped holding a charge.
One more thing.....2 1/2 years ago, the last time I signed a contracf
with Sprint, I dealt with the rudest, most uncaring, and just plain
incompetent customer service reps I've seen in any industry. It took
a year down the road to get everything straightened out. Over the
last few days, I've spoken to about a half dozen Sprint reps in
getting my Retention plan and second line, then cancelling the second
line and free phone, and then adding it back with the 5300. Everybody
was polite, and curteous. They didn't all have the answers at hand,
but they at least told me so when they weren't sure of something and
checked with a supervisor. I appreciate somebody taking the time to
find out the correct answer (although they probably should have had it
at hand, my impression was that they were mostly new employees and I
was throwing them some curve balls) rather than making something up to
dispatch with my call (which they did back then). Kudos to Sprint CS,
I never thought I'd say that.

Amazon.com will sell you a new battery for your 8500 for $59.95
just search on "Samsung 8500 battery". When current battery finals dies,
car charger may no longer power it.
