    Hi all,

I'm considering a data card plan and SPCS (for my needs) offers 300MB
for $100 where T-Mobile offers $30 for unlimited including access to
    their hot spots.

They "claim" speeds around 56K unless you're at a hot spot which is much
faster. Now, I know their coverage is nowhere as extensive (at least, it
doesn't appear to be), but the pricing difference is really big. What
    gives? Am I missing something.

I already have two SPCS phones on the 3500 minute plan and was just
    wanting to simplify this.

Any thoughts on going to the T-Mobile plan?

    TIA

T-Mobile is smaller, they are trying to build a base of clients. If
they have coverage whete you are its a fantastic deal. But watch that
    "if".

If you decide to go with Sprint, we have a deal that ends 10/10.
Purchase a Novatel, AirPrime, or Yiso CD connection card for free after
rebate. Or get $200 off the AirCard 550. These rebates require a 2
    year agreement.

Just a note on this, Sprint's wireless data is far faster. T-mobile will
give a theoretical 56K which we all know tranlates to between 4 and 14
Kb/sec Sprint's card is far faster adn the card itself is cheaper,
without waiting for a stupid mail in rebate.

I have a Merlin card. In the last 2 months I have used it all over
Florida, have had it up in Mass, NH, Vermont, Maine. I bought it when data
usage was unlimited for $80 a month.

Most places, my connection speed has been dialup. I have found a few places
in town, around Orlando, Tampa, and Miami, where when I download something,
it will transfer between 7-10 kbytes/sec. Most every place else downloads
will run 2 kbytes/sec. The latter includes every place I went to in Vermont

On the whole, I am impressed with the coverage, it works where I need it to
work. But you won't see 56k or better unless you are in certain areas, and
I have not found a way to predict where these are.

About two weeks in Avon Park I had to download a 1 meg file, and it crawled
on its belly in at 1.6 kbytes/sec. I called CS to complain about it - and I
wish to note they responded very quickly. Very professionally they went
through a few check the configuration of the card type stuff, and concluded
I was setup correctly, they were just having insufficient capacity at my
location at the present. I drove about 30 miles up the road near Orlando
and I was getting download rates around 11 kbytes/sec

    Brandt,

I don't see the $90 unlim on the SPCS site but it is on the dreampages
site. Is that what you are referencing?

    Re: Data Card Plan Question

To all who have responded, Thanks for you insights. One other thing I
was thinking abouth the Verzion deal since I live here in SD and could
get pretty good speed in this market, just not sure how it would play
out when I'm on the road.

I spoke to a friend of mine in NY who was using the T-Mobille plan and
said it was really slow for him (not that that he's gone to SPCS). I
think he just decided to use his dial up number for his cable service
    when he's on the road.
