Actually, I have no clue where Mammoth Lakes is, but in most places Verizon
works just fine. (I use both Verizon and SPCS.)

You may have hit a pocket where they don't have solid coverage. All providers
    have areas of crappy coverage.

I'll bet it's 800 AMPS that Verizon sells to make money (have you ever
seen tohse cheezy pre-piad deals out there, they buy bulk pre-piad from
Verizon, CIngular, AT&T etc then resell)

I live in a bad area, in which I pick up the Verizon system, and it does
sound horrible. At least in comparison to Sprint.

The OP stated it was CDMA. However, even if it wasn't, AMPS is
actually capable of better quality voice then CMDA. The catch is that
interference becomes a very real issue for voice quality with an
    analog signal.

Ahh, for the good old days of AMPS and my Motorola PT550. Don't you
remember the hiss and whine you would get on those. It sounds more like
our esteemed visitor was describing AMPS service to me. Just because it
is Verizon does not make it CDMA. Hte biggest advantage ot AMPS is the
building penetration due to the signal going up to 6/10 of a watt
instead of the 2/10 of a watt for digital (and you wondered where the
battery life comes from on these new phones)

The $10 50 minute plan stil has a purpose. It works for Canada and
Mexico roaming. So slap one of those babys on if you go there.
