Sorry, this is way off topic but anyway..
That is a very short term solution and will only work for a small
percentage of the US. The oil cartel ensures a steady flow of foreign
oil and a somewhat steady price. If the US as a whole starts reducing
the amount of foreign oil they need, the demand goes down, the supply
will be cut back, and the price will effectively stay the same or go
up. In effect.. the same amount of money will travel to the cartel
but for even less product. Take this one step further. Now that the
price is higher, more domestic drilling and exploration starts as it
is now profitable for them, and current technology with alternate fuel
sources are getting more cost effective. The price of oil does not
come down as the cartel balances their output effectively keeping the
supply/demand and price the same. As the domestic production %
starts to rise and alternatives seem to be catching on, it starts to
become a threat to the cartel, they increase the supply, lower the
price and now the domestic drills can not compete and are forced to
close down and alternative fuels do not get mainstream. The cycle
starts over again. IMHO, This is why alternate forms of power have
not made inroads in the US. They are not cost effective to develop
and deploy. The current tax breaks offered now for alternatives like
the Prius, and others like solar, wind etc.. help specific owners and
some companies but are not helping the US economy as a whole because
of the subsidizing. Until some scientific break through with solar,
fission/fusion, geothermal and [insert others here] can break the
cycle of foreign oil supply and demand, and work without government
help, we are not gaining any ground. I think large oil companies and
their lobbyist and certain administration buddies are only compounding
the problem.
Another thing to consider is the loss in local and federal tax money
from reduced gas sales, that money needs to be made up from somewhere.
I drive a small car myself.. Not a hybrid but I get almost 45 MPG in
the summer and about 40 MPG in the winter.
The above opinion was only based on my observations.
