Does such an animal exist?

There are some places in the US where CDMA is not available but TDMA is.

And of course we all know how much GSM is used worldwide.

Just curious to see whether or not this even exists. I highly doubt it,
but it would be nice to have a CDMA/GSM phone. Then you can use the
"best network" in the US (VZW) and use GSM when travelling elsewhere.

There are chipsets in testing that support CDMA/GSM both and has been talk
of a phone that can do both.

Yes, Qualcomm is doing hybrid CDMA/GSM chipsets. There have been no phones
released that use them yet - I'm not even sure the chips are ready for prime-
time.

We have been told by our Verizon National Account rep that
Verizon will launch a combo GSM / CDMA phone by end of year, it's
likely to be a Sony Ericcson. So far as the GSM dide is concerned
it will be Euro GSM only.

The launch (but not the brand) has been confirmed by a couple of
executive suite folks.

Apparently it wasn't even on their radar scope back in January
but Ivan Seidenberg (CEO Verizon) passed the word to Charles Hand
(CEO Verizon Wireless) that he was continually being beaten up by
other Fortune 500 folks as to why their Verizon phones wouldn't
work overseas.

We saw a prototype Motorola combo GSM / CDMA unit (v60 form
factor)operating in Washington DC last fall on the small Euro GSM
network run for foreign diplomats but evidently nothing came of
it.

Unfortunately the immediate international operability plans are
for voice only. There is no word of a combo 1X/GPRS Blackberry
yet although they are hopeful about the second half of 2004.
Currently even the Verizon senior execs going overseas can't take
their Blackberrys with them.

Now, *that* would be ironic, wouldn't it. SonyEricsson is worse about
ignoring CDMA than Nokia is.
