I believe some time ago someone posted a URL to enable you to do this. I
checked out nanpa.com and also did some google searching but this resource
alludes me. I also tried entering the entire number in the reverse number
phonebook but that doesn't appear to work on cell phone numbers.
If someone could post the URL (assuming it really does exist) I'd
appreciate it.
-Dan
PS: I also realize LNP will make this information harder to come by etc. I
have a friend who's being plagued with unwanted phone calls and wants to at
least identify the carrier.

Try the better alternatives to Micro$oft applications:
Corel WordPerfect and Quattro Pro; Eudora; Agent;
Lotus Organizer; MusicMatch Jukebox; Quicken; Palm OS PDAs.

The number prefixes are assigned by the NANPA.

Hey,
go to www.primeris.com and click on phonefinder.
That's it.
Hope this helped.

It's also not very accurate right now.
A Verizon cellphone 336-408-XXXX gives the provider: GTE MOBILNET OF
THE SOUTHEAST - NORTH CAROLINA
And LNP will make it much, much worse.

Actually, GTE Mobilnet is Verizon Wireless- its of of the entities that was
merged to form it. They probably still do business using the name (a
common practice in the corporate world).

They do. Corporately, Verizon is still whatever corporation it was
before Verizon came to be. In the NY market, for example, all
"Verizon" exchanges are owned by "Bell Atlantic".

....because it depends on NANPA and FCC data. Whenever mergers happen,
the corporate names are rarely ever updated in these tables. Have you
taken a look at FCC tower and frequency assignment data? That's even
worse. PageNet, Airtouch, and all other names of defunct business still
exist there. My hometown has all of its VZW towers still listed as
owned by CONTEL Cellular, which was the B-side AMPS carrier there before
even GTE took them over.
