A310 for free (with 2 year contract) a good deal?

My local Circuit City has the Samsung A310 for free after $100
rebate with a 2 year contract ($30 with a one year deal). Is
this a decent deal, or is there another source where I can find
an equivalent or better flip phone?

It's a good deal, I paid 79.00 for my a310. It works fine.

Getting hung up with a 2 year contract is not a good deal.

For someone who a $30 plan is overkill, I really don't think
it's a major deal to have a 2 year contract, unless you see
rates going way down. I've had AT&T for a while, and I'm only
switching because the service in our house has degraded to the
point where we have to stand on one leg in the corner of the
house to get good reception. Having free LD and night and
weekend minutes is worthless to us if we can't make calls from
our house. I have reason to believe that Verizon has a much
better signal around here. Personally, I'd be happy with a v60i
if I could get it for free, since that is what I have from AT&T.

A consideration -
The phone has a one yr warranty - if something goes wrong between 12
and 24 months - could get expensive.
I like my A310 - but it needed exchanging.
In my case, I would pay the extra $30

True.. although I wonder if my credit card's extended warranty
would cover a second year. One other consideration: how much of
a retention bonus might I be able to get out of Verizon a year
from now to re-up for another year? Might it be worth more than
$30?

AFAIK, VZW does not offer retention deals. Don't think they need to,
either.

Re: A310 for free (with 2 year contract) a good deal?

The A310 is a nice enough phone, but only if you spend most of your
time in a strong signal area. It doesn't seem to fare as well in an
area that is only 2-3 at best. We got ours for $50 less a $25 rebate
for each, but it's been a long road because in our area, signal
strentgh is a funny thing ( I wish it was funny). My husband keeps
bugging me to give up Verizon, because of the signal problems we've
had. The Nokias we had before seemed to handle the signal anomalies
better.

Re: A310 for free (with 2 year contract) a good deal?

Well, that's interesting, as I'm switching from a v60i with AT&T
because of signal problems, and was finally told by someone at
AT&T today that the v60i has problems in low signal areas. I
believe that my Verizon signal here is good, but of course if I
checked it with some other phone (my old Ericssons never had
problems, nor does my daughter's Nokia), I would probably say
the same about AT&T.

Re: A310 for free (with 2 year contract) a good deal?

I figured I'd stop back and post what I decided to do.

I checked out the Verzion corporate sales site I have through my
company, and I was able to get an LG VX3100 for free with just a
one year contract, and no activation fee. I am sure that the
A310 is a much nicer phone than the 3100, and I know the 3100 is
only dual-mode, but given that this phone is for my
technology-challenged wife, I really don't think that there is
anything that she's going to miss from her existing v60i. All
she cared about was the flip phone design, all I really cared
about was that it had the vibrating alert for when I carry it
when we go out. Oh, and of course that we have a decent signal
in our house, something that AT&T was unable to provide with the
v60i.

Sadly, even though there is a Verizon Wireless store 5 minutes
from my house, they were unable to sign me up with the corporate
deal, so I had to order it online and it may take up to a week
to arrive. How stupid. At least when I bought in the past from
the AT&T corporate folks, they got me the phone the very next
day via Fedex.
