> Is this really normal for a VX6000 in my area of service?
> My service area is Orlando, Fla.
Yes, it is normal for the VX6000 to display a 1x when it's in an area served
by the 1x type service. If you see it displaying the D symbol, that means
that the older (and slower) digital service is available. You can force the
old digital mode by hitting menu, then 0 (zero) then all 0's for the code
and choose item 3 (force mode). Then you can force mode 4 or mode 3 (the
older D modes) and you'll see the D symbol on your phone. Be careful in
those service menus as you can easily mess things up if you don't know what
you're doing.
One interesting thing while in the service menus is to choose 'field tests'
and then 'screen' and it'll give you all sorts of information about the sid
and channel you're on, the received signal strength (minus numbers where a
lower minus number indicates a stronger signal so that if you are out a ways
from the nearest tower, it'll probably be in the -90s range. If you're very
close to a tower, it'll be in the -50 to -60 range).
Also if you scroll down, it'll give you the battery voltage (but that only
goes up to 3.99 volts, so if you have a freshly charged battery, it'll
indicate 3.99 until the battery voltage goes down below 3.99). It also
indicates the internal temperature of the phone in degrees C. You can exit
this service screen by hitting 'clr'.
God Bless America!
