VX6000..... No digital service indicator?

I upgraded to a new VX6000 to replace an old Nokia 6185 last week.
I noticed that it never displays the "D" digital service icon my 6000 screen. Only "1x" is
displayed.
My old Nokia always displayed the "D" icon so I am assuming the 6000 should also.
The manual lists a digital service indicator icon is available on this phone.
I asked the Verizon store where I purchased it. They said it was normal. Should I believe
them?
Is this really normal for a VX6000 in my area of service?
My service area is Orlando, Fla.

Since the phone is digital only you don't need a digital service
indicator.

So then.... both the owner's manual and the icon glossary menu erroneously lists the "D" icon as
being included in VX6000 features?

Yes. The 4400 and 6000 display "1x" *instead of* "D", because 1x is a
digital network.

Just a little more clarification - if you are in a 1X capable digital
area, the phone displays 1X, if you are in an older CDMA digital area -
then the D displays. Both D and 1X indicate digital service, just
different kinds of digital service.

1x is short for 1xRTT, which is by definition digital. 1xRTT is the air
interface (think "protocol" or "language" spoken over the airwaves)
between your handset and the network. It's part of the evolution of
CDMA, the digital system that Verizon uses.

If this isn't convincing enough, then consider that your phone is
digital-only and has absolutely no provision whatsoever for analog
service.

Your Nokia, an older phone, didn't support 1xRTT, but your LG does.

You'll see it as soon as you use the phone in a digital area that does
not support 1xRTT, if ever.

Sure, there's no reason to be paranoid. Not about this, anyway.

Yes, it is normal for the VX6000 to display a 1x when it's in an area served
by the 1x type service. If you see it displaying the D symbol, that means
that the older (and slower) digital service is available. You can force the
old digital mode by hitting menu, then 0 (zero) then all 0's for the code
and choose item 3 (force mode). Then you can force mode 4 or mode 3 (the
older D modes) and you'll see the D symbol on your phone. Be careful in
those service menus as you can easily mess things up if you don't know what
you're doing.

One interesting thing while in the service menus is to choose 'field tests'
and then 'screen' and it'll give you all sorts of information about the sid
and channel you're on, the received signal strength (minus numbers where a
lower minus number indicates a stronger signal so that if you are out a ways
from the nearest tower, it'll probably be in the -90s range. If you're very
close to a tower, it'll be in the -50 to -60 range).

Also if you scroll down, it'll give you the battery voltage (but that only
goes up to 3.99 volts, so if you have a freshly charged battery, it'll
indicate 3.99 until the battery voltage goes down below 3.99). It also
indicates the internal temperature of the phone in degrees C. You can exit
this service screen by hitting 'clr'.

No, it's there, just that it isn't normally used if the 1x service is
available. As I said in my previous message, through the service menu you
can force the older D mode and then you'll see that D symbol instead of the
1x symbol. For data purposes the 1x is faster than the older D mode. If you
force into one of the D modes, it'll get reset to the 'normal' 1x mode if
you power cycle the phone. Or you can go back into the service menu and
reset it.

Thanks Mark,
Shame that the Verizon sales rep I talked to didn't explain it as thoroughly as you guys did for me.

You're extremely welcome!

Another little trick that doesn't seem to be in the manual: You can toggle
through the 'normal-vibrate-silence' ring modes by holding the lower side
button with the phone closed. This is the same button that is used for
activating voice dialing and recording voice memos.
