Kyocera 6035

I'm going to show my ignorance here -- I'm very interested in buying a
Kyocera 6035. It looks like the device I've been looking for a long time.

In researching my purchase, I've had several people tell me that I can get
the "Sprint Kyocera 6035" or the "Verizon Kyocera 6035".

Is that really true?

I'm no expert, but I didn't have to get a certain type of TV set based upon
what channel I wanted to watch. Why is it different for this particular
cell phone? Are all cell phones that way and I just didn't know it about
the StarTac I have?

Any help to this confused person would be appreciated!

Unlike your television, cell phones are generally subsidized by the
provider. Some providers put a Master Subsidy Lock code in the phone,
which means you can only use it on their service unless you can get
the lock code. And since the providers expect the phone to be used on
*their* service, they sometimes will have certain features of a phone
enabled or disabled. Case in point, the Kyo-2325, which is supposed
to have speakerphone capability, but I understand VZW had it disabled
on the units they sold.

Probably.

Basically, yes. Unlike your TV or radio, you don't change channels on
a cellphone. Each provider has their own part of the spectrum, and
different features. While the phone may be able to use both bands, one
is locked by the carrier as the "home" or primary and the other is
roaming.

I have not run across a "6035" on the Sprint system, although they have some
PDA-type devices.

The 6035 was available from Alltel and Verizon. It is a discontinued model,
so you would have to purchase one from some source, other than the carrier.
In recent months, some of my real estate associates who upgraded to the 7135
have said they are willing to sell their 6035's. If you are interested, let
me know and I'll see who has what, and how much they are asking. These are
working phones which were in service, but the owners wanted to have the
"newest" toy in town. (grin)

Yes. I have a "Sprint 6035" set up for Verizon. In order to do that,
however, you have to get the Master Subsidy Lock code for the
particular phone and reprogram it.

However, Verizon will no longer activate new phones that aren't
GPS-capable, and the 6035 isn't.

If you have a Verizon phone it's not locked. But it may be missing
features that the same phone sold by another carrier has.

I understood the person who posted this info to say that VZW and its
agents (e.g., Radio Shack) could not *sell* non-GPS-capable phones
any more, but that the restriction did not apply to phones provided by
the customer.

Look at the list on the Verizon web site. I don't think any of them have GPS.

All of the ones mentioned under my zip (95014) say either aGPS or
E911-capable. E.g. Kyocera KX414: "aGPS capable for E911 emergency
location". I have one of models labeled E911-capable (Motorola T730),
and it has aGPS (says so at when it boots).

Doesn't seem to work yet in the San Francisco Bay Area, but that is
another issue.

I just activated a 6035 with VZ about a month ago...

That was last year. GPS-capable only started 1/1/2004.
