#1 | | Guest | Is it possible to get cellular service for an Audiovox phone in in my 1997
Cadillac? I bought the car used last year and I'm really not interested in
having OnStar service, but I'd like to have, possibly via a prepaid plan,
use of the the existing phone. It's my understanding that Verizon originally
provided the "personal calling" service that was a part of the OnStar
package.
OnStar will now only provide cellular service for hands-free phones.
Thanks.

your CDMA Digital phone.... so if the phone in your car once had Verizon
service, and is Digital/ CDMA, should be easy enough for anyone to assist.

Normally onstar phones are analog.
Only the newer onstar phones are digital capable.
Those coming out ins the last year or so.
Verizon will not activate an analog phone.

because they have always been only digital there. Where are you?

From the onstar web site.
..................................................
As of June 2003, all OnStar systems utilize analog-only hardware. From the
beginning, OnStar has relied on a nationwide analog wireless network to
provide communication to and from OnStar-equipped vehicles. Today, the
analog network continues to provide the most extensive coverage across the
U.S. and Canada.
.................................................. ..
ALL onstar systems used analog only hardware.

Nashville Indiana.
And may I ask what places have only had digital coverage?

If you are on the east side of the US, you may have an option.

Maybe it's more like you can no longer get/activate in some states, which is
more likely.
I can't imagine a place where "Digital" ( using word loosly ) was the only
medium.
That would mean there had been no A or B side coverage and PCS type carriers
came in late, in the mid 90's.
Which would mean "that" area hadn't been able to use a cell phone until
after PCS carriers came in.
I would be curious as to where those spots are as well. ;-)

Start service with a free phone or other CDMA digital tri-mode phone and
plan, then when it is all setup, wait a week for all of the system updates
and paperwork to go through and then switch phones on the account website.
Unless the audiovox supports Caller ID, you will not be able to receive
calls until this feature is turned off.
Sounds like more trouble than it's worth really. Do you live in a rural
area? You can just leave the phone for 911 calls ( don't need to activate to
make 911 calls ) and just get a newer handheld and a car kit.

are some places where verizon does not have any analog service, like in
WI, perhaps FL and TX. I do not know about IN. Where is the original
poster located was what I was asking.

Better stated: "And in some states they have never activated an analog
phone
because Verizon has always been only digital there."
Doesn't Alltel provide "B" side coverage in WI?
GTE was sucked up by Verizon so, FL and TX are now native 800Mhz Verizon.

#11 | | Guest | Alltel does provide cellular service in some parts of WI. So that
cadillac onstar might be activated with Alltel if the owner lived in
those parts of the state. But not with verizon, in I think almost all
of the state. Maybe near Minneapolis, verizon might operate an analog
network, but in the rest of the state verizon is all pcs cdma.

#12 | | Guest | We used AT&T for our 97 Deville. It was a very expensive deal. Looking at
my old bills--including the dropped calls, about $1/minute. AT&T customer
service is awful. I was told that an agent had the authority to give a
certain credit at their discretion. I just had Verizon give me a $75 for
dropped calls, just because I started rattling off the numbers on the bill.
