#1 | | Guest | I tried using my Verizon Mobile Office in Fairplay CO and I was able to get
a connection but Internet Explorer was not able to find any web pages. I was
looking for webmail to check my e-mail. I am using an Audiovox 9100 and it
set and reeived quite a bit of stuff and showed activity, but kept saying
web pages were not found.
I have tried this in Golden, CO and it worked.
I guess I need to contact Verizon, but maybe someone else has some
experience? Do some towers not allow data communications?
Thanks,
Charles

times. It will happen when I am roaming on
an extended digital service, i.e., Sprint. Try
using Verizon Quick Connect or dialing into
your local ISP in that area.; Luck | | | |

code. Fairplay is 719 area code.

#5 | | Guest | Are you in a native verizon area or an extended verizon area? (what's the
front of your phone say?).
Are you dialing the data number #777 or do you have a regular phone number
in the software? (software dialing only, you can NOT dial the #777 from the
keypad!)
If you are in a native and many extended areas, you can tell MO to dial #777
and connect to verizons internal network connections, rather than try and
dial a long distance number. You also don't have to keep changing phone
numbers when you travel.
From your statements, I wonder if you are trying to dial a local ISP number,
that works in one place but not another. If so, try the #777 instead.
You should never have to dial a local (or long distance) isp phone number
with Mobile Office.
Essentially, you use #777 as the number, and the verizon network acts as
your isp/network server and connects you to the internet (mail servers are a
different animal).

The last time I was there, September 2002, it was still Verizon Analog.

thing and then trying to connect to my own ISP. Does it cost more than
normal minutes to dial the #777 if that is not what I am doing?

#10 | | Guest | No cost difference whatsoever, and if you connect using #777 instead of
calling long distance (or a local number if there is one), it is a direct
connect (takes less than a second) rather than a modem negotiation that
takes about 7 secs (handy when a reconnect happens too).
Real handy when travelling, you never have to worry about local numbers for
your ISP.

#13 | | Guest | Charles,
I traded places with my wife, and as she drove I was able to surf away all
the way from Glenwood Canyon through Breckenridege. It was near Hoosier
Pass that the road was too curvy, and the scenery too nice, to continue.
But I'm fairly certain I was accessing the Fairplay site right before
shutdown. There could easily be a trunk problem that VZW might never know
about unless a couple people complain.
I am not using Mobile Office software, I am just using #777 and qnc with a
generic driver for XP.
Life does get weird over the pass since Fairplay is no longer Qwest
landlines. Also, there is a new site being built over Roberts Tunnel. If
you're closer to Jefferson you may access that site instead of Fairplay and
it'll be all-new. Since the digital upgrade, signal strength has improved
from Fairplay, but it's still hit or miss in Indian Mountain and The
Buffalo.

#14 | | Guest | Thanks, Bill. I was wondering where you were.
I am West of Fairplay, at 11,000 feet about 1/3 of the way to Leadville (if
you are a crow. If you are not a crow, this won't take you to Leadville). We
are along Fourmile Creek on CR 18, at the base of Lamb Mountain.
So we are "looking" at the Fairplay tower. I need to try this again in
Golden, pay attention, then try again up there and call Verizon on my wife's
phone if I have problems.
As I said, the little lights on the icon in the task bar indicated it was
working right, the mobile office statistics agreed with sent and received
bytes in the little icon, but I could not access any web pages. Otherwise,
it "seemed" to be working.

#15 | | Guest | Charles,
I didn't know there were cabins up that far! We camp above Leavick when we
climb Mt. Sherman. I wonder of there is more multi-path there than your
browser can handle? Can you slow down your connect speed? Can you try it
in a spot with a better shot at the Fairplay tower, like down on rt 285?
If you're making a connection, the rest shouldn't depend on Verizon, there
ought to be something else amiss.
BTW. I was thrilled that the new Leadville site is on the air as of last
month! It won't help you until you get to the top, it's right in town. But
now I can go into my favorite coffee shop in the state and not lose service!
Can you try an outside antenna? My friends added a yagi at Indian Mountain
and it has made all the difference. You may need to kill some stray
signals.
