Is there a shortcut to put the phone into Silent or Vibrate?

My reading comprehension is pretty good, but I can't get the hang of using
the Ring Volume control on this thing.

I've been reduced to turning the phone off at weddings, funerals and
    meetings.

    Thanks!

Just use the down volume control button. The step down from "1" is
"Vibrate," and the next step down after that is "Silent." I suspect you're
trying to do it with the phone closed. IT ONLY WORKS WHEN THE PHONE OPEN.

It would be nice to do this when the phone is closed, but you're
correct, you can only do the quick ring volume down to vibrate or
silent when the phone is open.

Yes, push the "smart" button than toggle the settings with the up/down
buttons, than push smart button again. It will go from silent, vibe,
    vibe/ring, loud, soft.

"Reduced"? How about "gained some perspective" or "exhibited basic human
    decency"?
