No, if u say to them "I want to use my phone to give internet access to
my laptop", they will say "data plan". Check your bill, see if it says
"national enchanced services access", if you have that your account has
1x on it. Also remember to set ur phone to 1x or qnc through a
initialization string, or set it in the phone from "auto" to "1x" or
whatever. I dont use ur phone so I cant say specifically. If you try
QNC username in 1x mode it will say login failed on the computer, if it
says that, it means ur phone already established a 1x connection. Now
if you dont get login failed, or get something like "network error" or
"network timeout" or "call failed" on the phone's screen, thats a phone
problem. I had the same thing with my Audiovox 9500, it worked fine in
QNC, but didint work in 1x. Note the 9500's firmware doesnt ever
display a 1x icon, even after I eventually got it working in 1x, even
with the latest firmware.
I went to various stores, and their techs said "1x is if you have a
digital signal [for voice calls]", "if your phone can make voice calls,
your on our 1x/national access network", "1x isnt a speed, its a
network type", "all phones do 1x", "yes 1x is working fine on this
phone", basically they are RMAing on ur behalf/"clicking next" monkeys.
I tried the "i want 1x for get-it-now" they said "your phone already
uses 1x for get it now but we will check out your phone", took phone,
came back 1 min later and said "GIN works fine, there is nothing to
repair", GIN was using QNC AFAIK.
Then I got a idea, I cant directly tell them "Give me 144k now for my
laptop!!!!", heck they even say a MOK doesnt exist for this phone (it
does). So I got the idea to force the minibrowser to 1x, then get
mobile web, then complain mobile web doesnt work, but I cant complain
my minibrowser doesnt work if I am using a free
WAP gateway. So I
reprogramed the minibrowser to use 1x ONLY and ONLY have a #@vzw3g.com
login, obviously the minibrowser didint work, it said "waiting" for
about a minute, then said "network error".
I took the phone to a verizon store and told them I want mobile web,
they did a lil computer typing and said they turned it on. They then
asked why i didnt do it through the minibrowser, and I said "I tried
but my minibrowser gives this weird error, can u please look at it?",
the minibrowser was in 1x only mode at the time. They took the phone to
the back, 15 mins later brought it back and said "it still has the
error, the phone will need to take upto a hour to accept the fix and
then mobile web will work, if it doesnt fix itself after a house call
wireless data tech support", the 1x didnt fix after a hour, so I called
wireless data tech support, spent 1 and a half hrs on the phone with
them (45 mins waiting on hold before I got anyone). They did alot of
"turn off the phone and I will put you on hold, and then when i come
back, i will tell u to turn it on and try it again", after like 40 mins
of these cycles, it finally worked, I checked the connection settings,
the phone was still in 1x only mode the way I set it up, and the pages
in the minibrowser now all loaded much faster (vs QNC that I used when
my phone was on prepaid) and I knew I was in 1x mode. Now the phone
works with 1x with a data cable connected to a laptop, I am so happy.
And almost always in NYC I can peg it at 130-140 sustained and get 96K
streaming mp3, and at nights I can pull off 128K streaming mp3!!!!!!!!!
In my experiance, your 1x speeds greatly vary on your signal strength,
use the debug screen and make sure you have a under 15 EC/IO or E
numberor noise floor
..
