504 phones off line?

I've family and friends based in New Orleans (504) who are scattered all
over the south. NONE of their phones work regardless of where they might
be. Those that have phones with other carriers have service. What's going
on with VZN? Is it because their NOLA MOC is flooded?

The why are the others who are likewise based in NOLA still working? Better
planning?

Check your TV screen dipstick-- New Orleans is under water and the level is
still rising...

Mother Nature.

Ever watch clips from a tornado, for example. One home is flattened,
while the one, next door, isn't even scratched.

I've been monitoring a live feed via Internet from one of the TV stations in
New Orleans (WWL TV4 broadcasting from LSU and a makeshift studio at their
transmitter site). One of their staff mentioned that some people have been
able to use Text Messaging successfully to communicate with friends and
family, even though voice calls are not connecting. They did not mention
which carrier(s) this had worked for.

Good luck with contacting them.

That's definitely not true. I cannot make calls to friends who were in
the NOLA area on Cingular, nor Sprint. THEY can make outgoing calls
from their evac point in Baytown TX, but incoming calls have to route
through the NOLA switches and get hung up in the drink. Sometimes I get
a fast busy, other times it's "Due to the hurricane in the area you are
calling, your call cannot be completed at this time..."

SMS to Cingular phones in the surrounding area has not been working either:

I can understand the local towers being off line but a phone registered in
the 504 are standing right next to a phone registered in 214 does not work
were as the 214 VZN phone does. (both are in Houston BTW) By the same
measure a Sprint/Nextel phone registered in 504 does work when out of the
504 area.

Did anyone see the stupid ass black guy they were interviewing this morning?
He said to the interviewer, "This is the worse thing since the Titanic sank
in 1969". Of course the reporter could hardly keep a straight face.

Maybe VZN's switch for the 504 is down, but the rest of the network is
still up.

Read his question better, Silly 1. Two people who (used to) live in NO. One
has a VZW phone. The other has a different carrier. Both are now somewhere
else. The other guy's phone works there, but the VZW doesn't.

Now that you understand the question, give it the intelligent, technical
answer it deserves or shut up.

David thank you for putting a check sum on this.

By way of more information. I'm told that the other providers have disaster
plans which allow them to transfer the MOC function to other areas,
including allowing 504 in bound calls from outside the system.

Why not VZN?

I *HIGHLY* suspect the phone is not provisioned properly. Check to make SURE
it is set to automatic "B" side and NOT home only.
Secondly, their phones might need a recent update, (Yeah I know here comes
the *288 again).
Run the update! cant hurt......
Let us all know what works and what the problem is (WAS) so when the ****
hits the fan in our own neighborhood we know what to expect.

By way of clarification these are phones that travel the same areas on a
regular basis. FWIW there are something on the order of 15 VZN phones that
we know don't work. The only solution found was to sign up for new service
in the area where these people are currently located. Which leaves the
problem how do you let everyone know of the new number as no one knows what
the other party's new number is.

Someone reported in the other thread they ARE able to call other Verizon
phones from INSIDE Verizon on the "In Network" cell-to-cell calls. Have
you tried that?

I think the longline companies are still configured to route 504 calls to
the 504 switch that's underwater in New Orleans when you try to call into a
Verizon cellphone. That isn't going to happen any time soon. Verizon
needs to tell the longline carriers to route those calls to a switch in
their system that's working so they can route to the roaming cellphones
from a new location. It's sort of like a mass "no answer transfer" from
one area code to another.
