Mobileweb4u experiences?

I just rediscovered mw4u. What are people's experiences with it and
VZW's access to it?

I still have my LG VX6100, and may opt for the v325 when my contract runs
out in November.

Hoes does MV4U work? Do they tie into a phone number? I'm on the family
share plan with my wife, who also has a WAP-capable Motorola phone.
Could I sign up for my phone and use the same account on hers?

I understand they use my voice minutes. Bizarre how they seem to "hide"
how their service actually works on their web site. They only seem to
mention they work with VZW phones, but don't give many more specifics.

Thanks for any feedback/insight/experiences.

Scott

Re: Mobileweb4u experiences?

Have used mw4u on three Verizon phones in the past two years.
Latest is my new e815. Beautiful!

I can't speak to how it works technically, but it works. Well.

Yes, they tie the account to a phone number. If the phone doesn't have an
active number, no good.

You'll have to pay for each phone you want to connect to them.

From my contacts with "them", it seems like pretty much a one-man operation,
but he's right on the money, answers e-mails, and gets the job done. David
has sent me step-by-step directions to get me connected each time I get a
new phone.

Read opinions on mw4u at HoFo. People rave about the service. I'm very glad
I found it, because there's no way I'm paying $5 per month for the feature.
If I had to pay that much, I'd miss it, but I'd get over it.

BTW, I use it almost exclusively during "free time" (nights and weekends)
unless I NEED information from it at other times. Really handy to look up
phone numbers and directions when you're on the road. You can even check
your plane flight status when the weather turns to s$%t and all the 800#
lines are busy!!!

I appreciate your feedback!

I wonder how it would compare if I were to set up a proxy web server at
home? What makes mw4u different from any other non VZW service? What's
to prevent VZW from blocking mw4u? Has everyone who uses it just been
lucky up to now?

Re: Mobileweb4u experiences?

Scott,

I don't know the answers to most of your questions....my technical knowledge
is limited as I am just a semi-old-fart who loves gadgets.

If you set up a proxy web server at home, how would you connect to it from
your phone, say, 1000 miles away? Or, am I missing some technical point
here?

I just figured it was worth the $25 for the year to try it. If I waited for
someone to explain to me why it works, and why VZ doesn't stop it, I'd have
been without it for over two years.

The only technical question I can answer is, the difference between mw4u and
other non-VZW providers is that they (others) use public proxy servers,
which seem to stop working when you really need them, or get used to them. I
spent weeks constantly changing public server IP's until I tired of it and
decided to try mw.

Re: Mobileweb4u experiences?

You can set up a free proxy server on a home PC -- you can access it from
anywhere that the phone has a VZW signal. It is no different than how you
access MobileWeb4u. I use HoTTProxy (http://www.HoTTProxy.org) -- it's
awesome, and it's FREE! I also a dynamic DNS provider (http://DynDNS.org)
in order to translate my PC's IP address to a fixed hostname. For additonal
security, you can configure your PC's firewall to limit access in addition
to HoTTProxy's authentication.
