speed dial number linked to person?

We are looking for a new phone for my wife. She has an LG VX3100 and
is frustrated that she can't put in a speed dial number for a person
and then from the screen select from home, work, or cell. She thinks
she had that type of speed dialing on the phone that he had before the
3100. We can't remember what type we had -- maybe audiovox.

Alternatively on my VX8000 I just have separate speed dial numbers for
the home, the work and the cell of people, but I have to agree that
that feature she is talking about makes for less and easier memorizing
of speed dial numbers when you want to have speed dialing numbers for
twenty people.

Do any of the phones that Verizon sells work this way? As we are
looking at the Razor does it do what she wants?

We've got the VX5200. Contacts works almost as good as speed dial.
Contacts is a dedicated button, upper right, just under the flip-up display.
First thing that pops up is a search box that is active. Just type the
first letter of someone's name, hit view button, then you can choose from
any phone number you have programmed for that person.

You can also set any particular phone number to be "default" (for the person
it is listed under). This is especially helpful for people you call who are
ALSO Verizon Wireless customers. Set their cell phone number to "default",
and then the call is FREE ("In"). So if you want to use the default number
.. . .

Contacts, (search box is active and open), type first letter of someone's
name, hit send. Couldn't be much easier than that.

Also, you can set the speed dial number for a person to be DIFFERENT from
the "default" number for that person. That would almost accomplish what
your wife wants to do. For example, set speed dial 5 to call Aunt Susan's
cell phone. Then in the contact for Aunt Susan, set Aunt Susan's default
phone number to Home (landline). Then she could hit speed dial 5 to reach
Aunt Susan. If the cell phone is off or something, she could then hit
contact, type "S" (susan's name highlighted), and Send. If she doesn't get
through on the first 2 numbers tried, it's going to take just as long to
reach Susan as if all three phone numbers were linked to the speed dial
number anyway, so this will be just as fast. -Dave

Yes. My VX8000 works that way too, I think. I usually don't search
with the numbers/letters and just use up and down because I don't have
too many people in the total list and don't have to read the letters
on the keypad, but I will start doing it your way if I can remember.
(I'm pretty basic in my use of the phone).

But I do think what my wife is suggesting is an even better way to do
it since you can associate numbers for people. I guess we can figure
LG doesn't work that way. I wonder how motorala works.

Kyoceras will do it. You can do it one of two ways:

1. You can set up 1 or 2 digit speed dial numbers for each number a
contact has, like your VX8000 does now.

or,

2. You can set up a 1 or 2 digit speed dial number for the contact's
primary number. I prefer to use their initials, where possible. So
John Doe would be speed dial position 53. After pressing 53, you can
press OK, and it will bring up all of John Doe's numbers. You can
then scroll down the list and select which one you want to call.

Thanks..... I just got that technique going on my VX8000. I have set
a two digit speed number to be a associated with a friend's home phone
number. I hit [7] [6] [soft key VIEW] and it brings up the Contact
window with the home phone highlighted, and I can either hit [SEND] or
go up or down for choosing work or cell phone numbers. That seems
about as straight forward as it could get.

That is exactly what my wife wants her old VX3100 to do and if I could
figure out her old phone I might not have to get her a new phone as it
still has one advantage over some of the cooler new phones -- small
size.

Nope.... just asked her.....she wants a new phone. Does anybody know
if the Razor phones work that way?

Re: speed dial number linked to person?

My conclusion is that only LG seems to have the feature that we want -
associating speed dial numbers to people rather than to phone numbers.
That feature makes so much sense to me that I wonder why other
manufacturers don't have it. It really seems like the least amount
of clicks.

Can't find original post(s) re the subject but my Moto v325 does
that, associating speed dial numbers to people. One can also choose people &
their seperate phones,ie home, cell, work, etc, with each having their own
speed dial number.

Re: speed dial number linked to person?

I went in to a Verizon dealer and he showed me that most of the phones
that I am looking at, including the Razr and other Motorolas all
shared the same operating system that looked very much like what I
have on the LG. I paged my way through things and it appears that I
will be able to set up any of those phones (not every phone they sell
but everything in my price range) to do what my VX8000 does in terms
of linking the speed dial to a person, not linking the speed dial to
only one of the person's numbers.

So with that understood we feel free to buy other phones besides the
VX8100 but I'm thinking that my VX8000 works well for me, I have data
and charging cables, I have extra stuff for it. I know how to get
data in and out via Bitpim so I might as well stick with LG and get
the VX8100. Does anybody know of any problems with the 8100 that
would make me want to try something else?

--- My wife's initial interest in the Razr dropped away when a sales
person convinced her that the smaller lighter profile meant it also
didn't have very good battery life compared to other heftier models.
