I'd like to see the cellular companies adopt some of the services
the landline companies offer, such as block your ID and you don't
get through.

#4 | | Guest | Consider an '800' number for your cell phone. I manage apartments and
when the tennents call I like to know who it is. The caller ID for 800
numbers is passed though and I get it every time. Only down side is I
have to pay for the call, but it is miniminal and worth it to get the
ID.
Drop me a note if you need more info on how to set it up.

Don't you have to wait for your long distance bill to arrive, or will you
get the Caller ID info on your phone, regardless of whether the caller has
turned Caller ID off? | | | |

Caller ID Blocking is automatically dropped when you call an 800 number
because the recipient is paying for your call. So the number passes through
just as if Caller ID Blocking was off.

Actually, no. Toll free lines do not use CID. They use ANI. http://www.answers.com/topic/automat...identification
With certain providers, ANI can be passed to computer systems and/or
display units with the call.

#8 | | Guest | I receive the calling number on EVERY call that goes thorough my 800
number to my cell phone. Strictly speaking the 800 lines use ANI, but
it is converted to CID at the end office.

#9 | | Guest | Caller ID shows up on the screen on toll free calls. Caller ID Blocking
Still shows the number as the holder of a 800 number is paying, So he has
the right to know who is calling.
When I have to make a toll free call I use my prepaid calling card through
there 800 line. No caller ID from me. There Is ways around everything. or
payphones.

Carriers give toll-free customers the option to reject calls from payphones,
rather than pay the extra fees on such calls.

Well, I guess I'm confusing the ANI with the CID. Any good answering service
can grab the ANI from a call, as long as the service is relying on the
callers calling a toll-free number. This is one of the major reasons you
see large answering services giving out toll free numbers as part of their
packages. It allows the subscriber to simply press a single digit while
listening to a message when they want to return the call, never worrying
about whether or not the caller has their number blocked.
Furthermore, if the answering service is more sophisticated with their
software techniques, they can grab the ANI even if the caller is calling a
local number that is *forwarded* to the toll free number. However, this
latter technique sometimes fails with some toll free providers.
My entire business relies on the latter forwarded ANI technique. My patients
call my local number, which is permanently forwarded to a toll free number
given me by a national answering service. When they call my local number,
the service gets their ANI, even if their number is blocked (except for
about 1% of the time). | | | |

Then with all due respect for Sprint, if they're not passing ANI on 800
numbers, then they suck.
I have two toll free lines (actually I may drop them, I'm really not
using them much at all) through MCI (now Verizon) and they do pass ANI
through to the display device. One rings to my cell phone, and does
display the caller's number even if they use *67.

Curious what appears on the other end when you do this?
