Battery life problem

I've got a brand new Treo 700w, and battery life is poor. I have to charge
every day, even though I only turn it on to check email maybe a dozen times
a day and leave it on for only three or four minutes each. (I sync it with
an Exchange server). If the battery is at 30% when I go to bed, the phone
is dead by morning.

I'm wondering if there are some settings I can adjust to reduce power
consumption. Any suggestions?

Are you sure there is nothing running? Check to make sure - [ Start /
Settings / System / Memory / Running Programs ]. Leaving the wireless on,
(for example) would eat the battery. If there is nothing running and you
get this behavior, it sounds like it's time to RMA the phone. This is
clearly not right.

want to check email? Is there a way to get it to turn itself on and off on
demand? I do occasionally use the web browser to look things up.

(I'd check the phone now to see what's running, but of course it's dead and
the charger isn't handy...)

I don't think there is a way for the wireless to turn itself off after you
disconnect. In fact, all applications on this thing keep running after you
close them. Very strange decision on someone's part, IMO. I suppose this
make the applications appear instantaneously when you want to run them
again, but the tradeoff is ugly considering the stupidly low amount of
memory allocated to programs.

There is a shortcut to the list of running programs, hold down the
"function" key (the one to the left of the "z", whatever its called) and hit
the "OK" button. In fact, I'll bet this shortcut exists BECAUSE of the
strange habit of not stopping programs when you close them - but I digress.
Once you get the list, hit the "Stop All" button displayed on the screen. I
regularly do this during the day - this helps avoid crashes.

You can also stop just the wireless by tapping the "connectivity" icon at
the top of the screen. If you are connected, there is a "Disconnect" option
on the popup.

I've been running the new firmware for about a week now - I haven't found
anything ugly, and I don't think I've had to reboot the phone since I loaded
it - much better than the every-other-day-reboot with the old firmware.

I tried to turn the wireless off, but it kept turning itself back on. Weird.
So I tried your suggestion and turned all apps off, including ActiveSync and
Internet Explorer. ActiveSync turned itself back on, and the wireless went
back on. So apparently turning wireless off to save the battery is not an
option.

This sounds like an issue with activesync. Check the settings. If you have
it set to sync automatically, it will "look for" a wireless connection every
10 minutes. I don't really do email on my device, so I only need to sync it
manually. There is a hack to disable the auto sync, creating a dummy
exchange connector which lets you get into the frequency-of-sync option.
You disable it there, then delete the dummy connector. Search back in the
group and you'll find the details.

Of course, this isn't an option if you actually want it to sync
automatically. In that case, I think you're stuck.
