How do you go about finding out whether a ESN is clear or active?
Thanks

If this is one you intend to activate on VZW, then call VZW and ask.

If you already have service, try to activate it online from your VZW
account. If it takes, no problem. If you get an error message, it's NG.

Now that's an interesting question. I wonder what the
effect would be of having a handset activated on 2
different carriers where the service overlaps?
Do they share a global ESN data base?

First, make sure it has had a recent bath? Okay, couldn't resist.
Telephone Customer Support, indicate that you have a backup phone, and wish
to verify that it is not lost, stolen, or in-use. They will usually
accommodate you. Be truthful, perhaps you have an esn of something you want
to buy, and you should get your answer from them. dr
