Why is it that these cell phone companies keep adding features ( V-cast,
web, games, MP3 player, ect) and the network dose not get any better?
Companies keep making cell phones to do more stuff, ( Maybe even cook
dinner - soon) and they would become useless if the network signal is not
available. Phones keep getting better but not the network. All cell phone
companies are the same way ( VZW, Sprint, Nextel, AT&T, Cingular) If you are
not near an interstate or a big city, you can't get any thing. I am on the
very fringe of the VZW network. I live out side a small town in Northern
Kentucky that as no coverage in the town. Network coverage in Northern
Kentucky is kind of poor any way and is not getting any better.

Kentucky is one of the few populated states that does not have good Verizon
coverage-- though the south-central area, Bowling Green, Edmonton and all,
    is pretty good.

They develop/push the kiddie features because the stupid ninnies buy them
and use them-- running up their cell bills 20-30-40 dollars or more each
month higher than they need to be. That's the glory of our system-- if fools
will buy it, VZW would be dumb not to sell it. It's really high margin
    income too.

As for me, I'm waiting for the MotoLG 3400XXX model phone. It will have an
electric shaver, flashlight and can opener along with drink cooler and a
    vibrator attachment for the ladies...

You fail to mention that it is very difficult for the horses to press
the buttons on a cell phone

Really simple....They follow the MONEY because the FCC doesn't do its job
of enforcing their license agreements, forcing them to cover their licensed
    area in a timely manner.

If a radio station had coverage like a cellphone license, the station would
face heavy fines and license revocation. Radio stations and TV stations
pay a heavy price to produce the required signal at the required distance
from their transmitters that will produce a watchable signal at ALL the
TVs, not just the ones in the rich areas or areas of heavy population
concentration....like cellular phone licensees. Broadcast stations must
pass a rigorous "Proof of Performance", performed by outside engineers
every year. They must prove to the FCC engineers they are transmitting
what their license says they are, providing a level-of-service in exchange
for use of the public airwaves.

It's about the MONEY...has been since the lawyer class took over FCC from
    the engineers, many years back.

Read my message above ....*Still Waiting*
I do not have a CP so my complaint is based on ppl who call me on a
cell. That means I get a spectrum of carriers across different areas.
My daughter called me from Boston the other day and it was as clear as
a bell. Today my son calls on the road and we got dropped twice.
That leads me to believe that if the cell user is in a city (near a
tower or whatever) there can be quality. However, as the cell user
moves away from a city it becomes more of a coin toss.

I'm in Westchester County, NY, a very populated area and one that has loads
of money (except in my household). There are lots of dead zones around here.
Even when you can get a signal, it's often so garbled that it's unusable. If
you go to http://www.antennasearch.com/ , you can get a listing of antennas
and towers within four miles of any address, as well as a list of proposed
and planned towers. I've typed in lots of addresses of places where I spend
a fair amount of time and found that there are no Verizon towers nearby and
none planned. The standard explanation for this is NIMBY but given the lack
of planned construction, I have a feeling that the carriers consider their
networks sufficiently built up. They probably assume that there is no
further money to be made in phone service, and are now focusing on more
    profitable services.

The problem with antennasearch is that it only lists th tower owner. If I
set up a tower as Bob's Wireless and lease space to Verizon, Sprint and
anyone else who can come up with the money, you wll only see Bob's Wireless
on the search. Also you will not see antenni on buildings, watertowers or
    the like.
Besides NIMBY's you also have the negotition of leases, infrastructure
capacity etc. all of which can slow build out to crawl.
You know that guy in the commercial? Can you hear me now? Believe it or not,
call companies do that knod of testing. well it's a little more automated
    then that.

OK - let me restate it. NO ONE has any applications outstanding for towers
or antennas in the areas I'm interested in. Maybe the list is not complete
or maybe I just didn't try hard enough, but it seems to me like there is
very little building going on. I guess I can understand that the companies
don't want to publicize their construction plans too much, but I would feel
better if I saw at least some evidence that they were aware of the holes in
their coverage and had plans to improve it.

You base your conclusions on two phone calls? I live in a suburb of a
major city. If I drive 125 miles in any direction my calls are as
clear as if I was in the city. While I am not an expert I would
imagine there are many factors in reception and completing a call
other than proximity to a city.

Sometimes calls are a crapshoot in a city too.
