Chances are the new owner has it turned on during his calls to Mexico, and
    the 900 numbers, of course.

Have you called Verizon about the phone being lost?

If the phone is actually turned off, IMHO, it will be unable to receive text
    messages.

I found out recently that the calendar will turn on the LG VX8300 to
remind you of an appointment. I don't know of any phone that will
receive data when turned off. If you had any appointments scheduled, I
suppose you could call the phone at the times the reminders were set to
    go off.

Your phone should be disabled by VZW, rather than hoping someone honest
has found it. Anyone that honest would make an effort to find out whose
    phone it is.

If it turns on at a scheduled appointment (which I still find hard to
believe) then you imply it turns itself off again after the reminder.

I checked again and only thought the phone had been turned off.

Re: Turning on a cell phone with a text message

Phones (most phones at least) will in fact turn themselves on when a
calendar or alarm event happens; these are controlled by the RTC's
which retain self-power even when the phone is off. However, when the
phone is off, so is the radio and radio stack (software), so there
would be no way to receive the message to turn itself on.
