I have spent a frustrating day trying to figure a way around Verizon's
apparent greediness. I currently use a 2 year old Motorola Razr with
Mobile Web 2.0. I bought a synchronization product from Motorola that
lets me update my phone numbers from the computer. But what I really
want is to stop carrying around my old Palm Tungsten E and get a phone
that will synch with my Outlook contacts, calendar and tasks, and
allow me to make updates. I don't really care about the mail as I'm
retired and can log in and look at mail online when I want to. So
what I'd like to do is keep the $5 a month Mobile Web for my web
access needs - it has worked fine for me. However if I buy a
smartphone with Windows Mobile on it, Verizon tells me the only way to
get web access is to buy a data plan - significantly more expensive
than the $5 a month I am paying now.

Wondering if anyone else has tackled this problem and come up with
    solutions.

    Thanks.

    Carolyn

Re: Verizon plans - Mobile Web vs. Data Plans

This question is asked often and as I understand it there is no workaround
for smartphones. If you want to use it as a smartphone you have to pay for
a data plan. Is there not a web-based solution, like google or yahoo, to
keeping a calandar etc. I pay $1 per month for web 2.0 access on my phone.
Web minutes count against my minutes except when the airtime is free.

Have you looked at howardforums for an answer?

I guess you didn't hear about verizon's new thing they have going.

Unless you signed up for a data plan ($60/month) or the vcast package
($15/month), you are charged $2/MB of data. So now on top of the
$1/month your paying for Web 2.0, you will also have to pay $2/MB of
data. (and yes, that is for any non-data/vcast plans)

That's only for new plans. People on legacy plans are grandfathered and
can still get data with MOU.

Carolyn, does Alltel have native coverage in your city? Where
    are you?

You can buy Alltel 1X service, more than fast enough at 110Kbps,
to serve your needs for only $10/month for really unlimited
service, no funny business. Their phone plans are much cheaper
than VZW, too, probably easily offsetting the extra $5 for real
    internet service.

Alltel, more interested in business than girls, also has many
good smartphones to upgrade to, COMPLETELY UNHOBBLED, at really
great subsidized prices for your 2-year-agreement. You can sync
them via the air or cable, whichever is more convenient for you
at the moment, without being forced by some stupid locking
software. Alltel won't install anything on your desktop
computer. You can even use your PDA as a phone modem if your
office broadband fails, or use a bluetooth connection for your
    laptop at no extra charge.

    It just works better.....

I had a problem when I switched phones to a new MotoROKR Z6M but
discovered a way to get my BT Nokia N800 to use it with a little
tinkering. Today, 2 weeks after I had called to tell them I'd
solved the problem, I get another followup call, just to see if I
was happy with Alltel's service. THEY called l'il ol' ME!
That's Alltel...They may not have the answer to your problem,
because my problem was with my Linux tablet, not their
phone....but they care enough to call back, something I really
appreciate any company doing, much less a SELLphone company.

You don't have to put up with Verizon's crap! They're not
    omnipotent.

I heard that you have to pay alltel more $$$ when you roam on other
network's area (such as roaming on Sprint area), is this true?

I saw the notice of the $/MB charge but it's not showing on my monthly
    statement.

Well it was just stared beginning of this month, so it cannot show on a
monthly statement as it hasn't been a month yet!

    Nope.

Compare the nationwide coverage maps. That's not a roaming map....

Oddy (or cooley) enuf, I got an alltell phone off ebay (my verizon e815
died, so I got an alltel one), activated it on my verizon service, and all
sorts off cool things work now, that my phone didn't support... Makes me
sort of wonder, do you have to live in an alltell area? What about getting a
verizon plan with a free verizon phone, and just activating the alltel phone
    on the verizon plan?
