I'm using Electronic Products Online neat USB converter:
http://www.electronicproductonline.c...hp?cPath=35_67
specifically:
http://www.electronicproductonline.c...o.php?cPath=35
_67&products_id=2043&osCsid=dd7d6c5caa6f86b504b42c486391f1ba
because it wraps the plug around behind the tablet and puts no strain at
all on the little USB jack. I have several of them for the 1TB Western
Digital MYBook hard drive, my rubber rollup QWERTY keyboard, and other
accessories for it. Mine works fine with a Maxstor drive (500GB I
think). The drives must all be self-powered. The tablet jack can't
power the hard drives.
The software solutions here:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi...p?title=HOWTO:
_USB_Host_mode_on_the_N800_using_OS_2008
are totally unnecessary with this hardware solution for $12. There's
nothing installed to suck up memory. You plug in the jack, the port
switches to HOST/OTG mode. Unplug the jack, the port reverts back to a
peripheral port. On the screen it simply says whatever you plug in
isn't supported. Just ignore it...works great.
Did you know the headphone jack supports microphones? It has 3
circuits, not just two. I'm using Electronic Products Online audio
adapter:
http://www.electronicproductonline.c...o.php?cPath=35
_67&products_id=1996
coupled with a $12 Logitech stereo headset with boom mic that has two
plugs for PCs. This combo makes phone calls on the tablet FAR better
than the internal too-sensitive mic and speakers in any noisy location
like a restaurant. Nokia's mic can hear the dishwasher running 3 rooms
away...(c;]
EPO has run out of the Linksys USB100 USB-to-Ethernet adapters that will
work with the tablet. The newer USB200M will NOT work to connect the
tablet directly to an Ethernet port. The older 100s can still be found
cheaply on the net. It's natively supported by its Linux. If you plug
the USB100 Ethernet plug into the USB OTG adapter, then you can connect
the tablet directly to your network without the wifi interconnect. It's
lots faster transferring files than over wifi....(c;]
By the way, the USB rubber keyboard works MUCH better than the Bluetooth
folding keyboard from Nokia. With all the traffic the tablet creates on
Bluetooth over DUN to the sellphone modem, it jams the keystrokes coming
in from the foldup keyboard over BT HID. Running the S9 BT stereo
phones makes it worse. The letters skip and double if you type too
fast. I type fast, so bought the rubber keyboard and it completely
solved the problem over BT. Besides, the rubber keyboard is a full
Windows PC keyboard with all the function keys, which I use a lot over
rdesktop to Windows' Remote Desktop on one of my XP boxes. I don't use
all that email nonsense with duplicate messages scattered across lots of
devices. I use one email client on the main PC and access it with
rdesktop from the Linux tablet either using the PC's virtual keyboard
onscreen with the stylus that does work very well....or just plugin the
rubber keyboard which makes it just like sitting at the terminal at home
over sellphone or wifi. I wish I'd never bought the Bluetooth
keyboard....waste of money.
I still don't understand how the MagicJack plugged into the Linux tablet
works without MagicJack's software being installed to handle it...???

I'm also on the verge of dumping sellphones. I retired this year so no
longer have to hang onto the phone to make my living. I do a little
daytrading to supplement my govt SS check. Even now it's quite
comfortable without being in the money ratrace. I don't need instant
comms any more other than Skype on some wifi to check my voicemail and
return calls. That's plenty of comms. If Verizon tries to screw with
my Alltel features when they suck up the company, I may dump sellphones
all together and pocket the $80 for more toys..(c;] 911 will still work
be Federal decree.
At the moment any Skype call when I'm not online directly forwards to my
Alltel sellphone. If I don't answer that, it goes to Alltel voicemail
so I can easily access it anywhere. Even Skype-to-Skype calls ring the
sellphone...except for the video, of course. I do a lot of Skype-to-
Skype comms from friends around the planet. They get to call my
sellphone free if I'm out. We just don't talk for hours unless it's
Nights & Weekends...

I can't power it. I called 'em. It's a pretty good load on the USB power
supply.

I have the Bluetooth one, doesn't need power off the usb, and works with all
my other bluetooth stuff, and they have drivers for windows so it works with
that too on the laptops with both xp and vista/and a bt dongle...
(they make two versions, one serial/usb and the other Bluetooth....The
bluetooth one is rechargable/runs off a wall wart, happened to have it for
my pda and smartphone, and just for giggles, tried it with the tablet,
worked with that too, and beats the heck out of a stylus)
do you or anyone here happen to know if a blackberry storm has bluetooth?
Works with my smartphone, sister ordered a storm, wonder if it will work
with that....

The accusation is that there's a "backdoor" into Skype available to
governments that require/request it. (I'm not suggesting it's true- just
passing on the accusation.)

wow, someone that can't read.... do you know the difference with works
*WITH* my nokia tablet (which is what i wrote), and ON my nokia tablet under
linux (which is apparently what you assumed)
use it *WITH* my pda's too, both devices have wireless networking, I have a
dumb node on my network that has multiple usb devices like printers/several
TB's of harddisk storage/scanners/tv tuners/etc on it, and they can be
accessed by all sort of things... tablets/pda's/smartphones/laptops... went
to goodwill, got an old puter for $50, and it's on the network with a whole
bunch of devices... Just find remote access software that works on the
device and over the network (check out http://www.remote-access.com/ for
software and neat ideas)...

The funny part is that Mr paranoia I don't believe anything doesn't get
it that you don't need to crack keys if a back door is built into an
encryption algorithm.

I think there is absolute assurance of that. I used to work with a
"larry" and it really made your day being around someone who could
always find a black cloud on the sunniest day...
