Fax over cellular using the Internet

Although it is possible to fax over cellular with a dial-up type connection
(CSD in the case of GSM), it's slow, difficult to set up and use, and isn't
available from all carriers in all areas.

An alternative for cellular with email or Internet access is to use a fax
service. I'm currently using two such services:

INCOMING FAX

eFax <http://www.efax.com/>
Supports fax-to-email (and vice versa). No charge for eFax Free (non-local
number, receive-only) if you're willing to put with occasional marketing
email.

OUTGOING FAX

Fax1 <http://fax1.com/>
Supports email-to-fax and web-to-fax, as well as proprietary Internet software
(FaxBlaster). Free to sign up with $1 trial credit. No monthly charge.
Prepay credit never expires. $0.12/page (successfully delivered) to the USA

I'm compiling this information for the cellular webpages I publish. If anyone
knows of comparable or better services, please follow-up here. Thank you.

Re: Fax over cellular using the Internet

FWIW, efax sucks - if your free efax number gets more than 20 spam faxes a
month they cancel the account if you refuse to upgrade to their paid plan.
And yes, you will get tons of spam faxes after you've had the number a
couple of years (I had one since they started and lost it last year because
of spam faxes). Reporting the spam using their form is a PITA (takes a good
10 min per spam, probably longer if using a cell phone connection to access
the efax site) but necessary if you don't want all of the spam faxes to
count against you. I do not recommend them at all.

Send2fax.com is an email and web based fax service that gives you an 800#
and is good for both in and outbound. My account is $1 service fee a month,
but new subscribers will pay $1.95 service fee. Per page fee is 15 cents for
successful in or outbound faxes. (They have high volume plans available
too - at lower rates than the efax paid plans.) if you send many faxes, it's
well worth $2 a month to have both in and outbound faxes using the same fax
system.

FWIW, I've never had a single spam fax on my eFax Free number, and I've had it
for quite a long time. (You may be giving your fax number out to the wrong
people.) If I did start getting spam faxes, I would simply change the number.

Why would I care about using the same fax system? My current setup of eFax
for free inbound and Fax1 for low-cost outbound is dead simple and works fine.

I'll have to agree only to add I've never had to change my eFax number in
the 6 years I've had it. I've only received a couple span faxes in the
beginning, but that dried up not long after.

Besides, I can't give it up now. I got it in Lakewood CA and received a
Maryland number. I now live in Delaware. Go figure ;-)

I've had a free efax number for three years and only 2 spam faxes
total in all that time.

Agreed.. efax is the worst. I signed up and they the flood gates of smap
email started. They sent me advertizments for any and everything every day.
I had used them many years ago, when they were still starting out, and they
only advertizment they had was in their fax reader. Now their software
installs all kinds of crap on your system.

Perhaps things have changed, because I'm getting no more than about one eFax
ad message per week, most of which are taken care of by my spam filtering. To
me it seems a small price to pay for a free fax number. What's your
alternative?

I'm using eFax Messenger 2.0, which has no ads. You can get it from
<http://appdb.codeweavers.com/appview.php?appId=667&versionId=887>.

I uninstalled eFax Messenger (1.x?) quite some time ago, and subsequently
discovered that the native "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" renders eFax
incoming faxes quite well.

Re: Fax over cellular using the Internet

Really? I receive my efax messages in .efx format and Windows Picture and
Fax viewer is not able to open those files. I tried many times to no avail.

I used jfax before and those files, I was able to open using Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer.

What format do you receive your efax in?

But you can choose to receive your eFaxes in TIFF format, which Windows Fax
viewer can open. (And I do receive mine as TIFFs.)

Re: Fax over cellular using the Internet

In order to receive efax in .tif format, do you have to subscribe to efax
Plus? I have the free service and I don't see that option in my account.

Their website does say that with efax Plus, you can receive faxes in .pdf
format. I don't need to do that because I can convert faxes to pdf format
myself.

Not surprising. Both services are owned by the same company.

I don't think so.

I'm pretty sure I get them in TIF format, and I have a free account too. (I'd
be more inclined to pay for an account if they would actually get local numbers
in my area instead of just telling me they have them.)

Someone would probably have to send me a fax. Been a while since the last time
I received one.
