If you want a TracFone on the Cingular (GSM) network, now is the time to
    act.

Over the next few years Cingular will be upgrading their already good GSM
network, while phasing out their TDMA network. I predict Cingular GSM
coverage will rival Verizon's CDMA coverage within 2 or 3 years.

www.tracfone.com is offering a refurbished Nokia 1100 FREE if you purchase
    a 40 Minute Airtime Card all for less than $20 (+ ~ $7 tax & shipping).

The Nokia 1100 TracFone uses a single rate plan, meaning there are no
roaming charges anywhere in the USA. In other words, roaming calls have the
    same rate/minute as local calls.

Note: All GSM TracFone models have single rate plans.

As far as I know, Cingular is the only GSM carrier that TracFone GSM
models use, including the Nokia 1100.

I have a Nokia 1100 that I like very much. I use it when I'm on the road
and roaming. My other TracFone's rate (Nokia 5180i) jumps to 2 times the
local rate when roaming. The 5180i uses the Verizon network, so for every
long trip I make I take both TracFones. The 5180i I use as my backup when
    roaming.

That's something I've been wondering about. Do you have the same phone
info in both phones like the same number? I'm in a similar situation.
I have a Nokia 2600 GSM which works good in the Ann Arbor, Mi area.
But we are headed uo to northern Michigan next month which is
CDMA area and I was wondering if I got a CDMA phone for up there if I
could use the same phone info on there or if I would have to get a new
hookup from Tracfone with a different number.

If you buy a 2nd TracFone, it will have its own carrier with its own
cellphone number. When you register it at activation, be sure to use a
different email address. Don't use the same email address or name you did
for your 2600. That way you can refer yourself before you activate, and get
100 Free minutes for each phone.

I went to the Cingular website for their GSM coverage map, and it looks like
there are some areas in central and northern most Michigan (next to Canadian
border) without GSM coverage (no service).

Unfortunately there aren't any GSM models that will fall back to analog mode
if no digital signal is present. Most GSM cellphones operate in GSM800,
GSM1900, or digital paper weight modes (i.e., paper weights don't make good
    cellphones).

The v60i, v120c, 5180i, 1221 TracFone(s) have the capability to fall back to
analog if no digital signal is present. The 1221 is TDMA800/Analog. The
v60i is either CDMA800+1900/Analog or TDMA800+1900/Analog, depending on the
    zip code.

The 2285 is CDMA800+1900, but has no capability for analog mode. Its
digital only (CDMA) like the digital only (GSM) models.

The average person getting a cellphone (TracFone) for the first time,
doesn't understand any of this *stuff*. I know I didn't when I got my first
TracFone four years ago. Back then only a couple different CDMA/Analog
models were offered for my zip code, which greatly simplified the decision
process. Now the choice of models and technologies available is more
    confusing than ever.

    Hope this answers the questions!

Yes, it did, thanks a lot. I was mainly wondering if you could have
the same # on two different phones if they were both Tracfones. I
presently have the Nokia 2600/GSM and the Nokia 3560/TDMA. The 2600 is
Tracfone and the 3560 is Justalk. Hopefully between the two of them
I'll have service around Alpena, Mi. If not I'll probably have to get
a different one there. The people where we are staying have the
2285/CDMA and they get good coverage there.

True for prepaid but the Nokia 6340 and Seamens T62U will fall back to TDMA
and AMPS with the right plan from Cingular. The national GSM plan with GIAT
the feature works fine with no extra for roaming. And you keep the same
phone number / voice mail box, while in GSM coverage you can use any
unlocked or Cingular GSM phone just put your Sim from the GIAT phone in the
GSM phone. Either phone can be had used for very little money from ebay and
    other online sources.

I went to the TracFone website and I can't tell which carrier is used with each
cell phone. I have one of their Moto V60i and I'm sure it uses ATT/Cingular
TDMA network. I'd like to have a TracFone on TDMA network which is OK for now
and one on either Cingular GSM or Verizon CDMA. I want to be sure.

    Thanks-

Where your phone number is / your zip code will determine your options with
    tracphone, for most:
    GSM = Cingular
    TDMA = Cingular
    CDMA = Verizon
Note tracphone will still reactivate amps phones in some regions, if you
have the wrong phone for example a TDMA tracphone then you can swap it for a
    CDMA tracfone.

In Birmingham (205) you can activate amps gsm and tdma tracphones on
Cingular , north one county (256) you get Verizon CDMA.

To get a tdma and a cdma tracfone you will need to supply different zip
codes, you can do this by picking zip codes till you get what you want when
you activate the phone, I do this online to make it easy to start over if
    you pick the wrong zip.

    Hi Helen,

That is a problem, because TracFone doesn't tell you what carriers are
available by zip code if called.

Where I live, Alltel and Verizon are the CDMA carriers. Both are good
carriers, but I have found text messaging works slightly better with
Verizon, so Verizon is the CDMA carrier I prefer. I had to keep
reactivating until I finally got the carrier I wanted.

I think this was a special case, because I don't know other areas where two
different carriers are used for the same zip code and technology.

If the Nokia 1100 (or any other GSM model TracFone) is available for your
zip code, then the carrier has the Cingular.

    Hope this helps!

I saw we had a loaner Cingular cell phone at work and it was using GSM. I asked
to try it for a day. I want to make sure it had good coverage at work and at
home. The only problem I had was during afternoon commute time, I could not get
connected for about 20 minutes. I assume that either there are too many
Cingular GSM phone in San Jose or they lack the bandwidth to handle calls. I
don't know if this problem will get better as Cingular switches TDMA circuits to
    GSM?

    Thanks -

What Cingular (GSM) is planning to do about the network saturation problem
you were experiencing is a very good question.

Nothing can be done about it until TDMA is out of the picture (several years
from now). There is only a limited number of time slots (talk channels)
available for any given technology (TDMA or GSM).

Until all the local TDMA towers are converted to GSM, and this may take
years, there will continute to be these network saturation problems during
    rush hours..

Converting the TDMA network to GSM will not create more towers per square
mile, it will give each existing GSM tower more bandwith to handle more GSM
    calls.. Make sense?

Maybe for now you should consider getting a GAIT phone that supports GSM,
TDMA, and Analog all-in-one cellphone, for the high population density area
in which you live. My sister has a GAIT cellphone on the Cingular network.
Her's is the Nokia 6340i. Its not on a prepaid plan though, its a contract
    plan (post paid).

I wish GAIT type phones (with multiple digital technologies) were offered by
TracFone, but to get more than one digital technology with TracFone, you
would have to activate two different models and have two different telephone
    numbers.

    Hope this helps.

Cingulars GSM coverage already exceeds that of Verizon's CDMA coverage. The
edge (if any) for Verizon is the AMPS coverage that it still has around the
    country.

The Cingular/AT&T AMPS coverage makes them pretty equal as far as coverage,
although you can't buy a GSM/AMPS phone from Cingular.

John, no offense but you are full of crap. Everybody I know of who has tried

superior CDMA coverage verses Cingular GSM.
