You can't really blame him *too* much for not making the distinction. Google
sure doesn't make that distinction. "Google Groups" *includes* all of the
archived newsgroups *and* the web forums.

And most people probably don't realize that...

    I said *probably.*

I've worked for ISPs before. Many people (including many of my former
customers) would scratch their head in confusion if you said "usenet" or
"newsgroups" - it's not like 10-15 years ago. Usenet just isn't as big a
communications medium as it used to be, and a lot of people don't have a
clue that it exists, let alone what it is.

Re: Join the Rogers-Fido news group!

I can't believe so many people (including me, now, I guess) have spent time
talking about the distinction between a Google discussion group (beta or
    otherwise) and a Usenet group.

With all the upheaval because caused by the Rogers-Fido integration, aren't
there more important issues to GSM subscribers in Canada?

I think most people have resigned themselves to the fact that either
Fido has gotten so bad that they're quitting as soon as it's convenient
for them to do so (I already have) or that Rogers will effectively kill
it off, meaning it's time to start shopping for another deal. It's a
shame that there isn't another GSM service provider in Canada (yet there
are two CDMA). Good work, ****heads at CRTC and the Competition Bureau
(I actually know a guy who works there - the description fits). So the
only thing left to argue about is how much worse it can get or just
trivial **** like the distinction between a newsgroup and a bulletin board.
