I witnessed an accident on the freeway yesterday and tried to dial 911 from
my Sanyo MM7400 cell phone using the headset. I pressed the button on the
headset and said "Dial Number". The phone asked me for a number and I said
"911". The damn phone could not understand this!!! I could not believe it!!!
I routinely voice dial 7 digit and 10 digit number, however the phone cannot
handle dialing a three digit number. I gave up and dialed 911 using the
keypad. After making the call, I came very close to tossing the Sanyo POS
out the window. Unbelievable!!

I can. What you want is voice digit dial, and a whole bunch of phones have
it, but not the Sanyos. The phones that have it typically run
voice-recognition software from VoiceSignal. On Sprint, the Samsungs all
have the VoiceSignal software and the Motorola phones may also.

To call a phone a piece of **** because it doesn't understand "dial
5-5-5-1-2-1-2" or "dial 9-1-1" is silly, because most phones *don't.*
On my VGA-1000 and the VI-660 I had when using Sprint, the VoiceSignal
software made me a huge Samsung fan. After setting the phone to run VS when
you open the flip, you can open the flip, and it'll prompt for a command,
and you say "Digit Dial" and read off the digits... just remember, you have
to say "eight oh oh" or "eight zero zero" for instance, not "eight hundred".
Plus, all of the phonebook entries automatically have voice dial entries! No
training required! Plus, the voice recognition is speaker independent.
Worked as well for my wife as it did for me.
(I have a VGA-1000 that I need to get rid of since I no longer use Sprint.
Want to buy it? I guarantee you will love the voice recognition.)

accurately, why can't it recognize a three digit number? Since I stop
talking after the third digit, it should accept the three digits. There is
no excuse for this.

It might have been a conscious choice on the part of the designers so as to
avoid accidental dialling, which is very much a problem for the 911 system.
Since you have to flip open the cover or press a button to make a call anyway,
they probably figured there are few situations where you could speak 911 but
not punch it into the keypad.

You're missing the point:
Unless there's something I don't know about the 7400, it doesn't *support*
digit dialing, only voice-dialing predefined phone book voice dial entries.
Motorola uses the same VoiceSignal software in their phone that Samsung uses
in theirs.
The VoiceSignal software is great because I do not have to train it to
recognize new entries that I add to the phone book. In other words, all I
have to do is add the name to the phone book and I can voice dial the name.
Cool Stuff. Much better than the Sanyo 4500. The 7400 supports the command
voice command "Dial Number". It will then prompt you to speak the number
that you would like to dial.

You could assign what is called a "voice tag" to it. The 7400 supports two
commands to call a phone book entry:
1. "Contact": This command will dial person in the phone book by name. All
that you have to do is enter vthe persons name in the phone book.
2. "Call Voice Tag": This command allows you to use to old style of
assigning a voice name to a phone book entry. To use "Call Voice Tag", you
must have previously entered the phone book entry and then record a voice
name to be associated with the phone book entry. This is the old method that
was used on the MM4500. It is tedious and requires more memory to store the
voice tag. I believe that Sanyo kept this function because some names may be
ambiguous when using the "Contact" voice command and therefore you can
record the name and associate it with a phone book entry to solve this
problem.

That is correct. My opinion is that if the phone is going to support voice
dialing, it should do it correctly. I have been designing software user
interfaces for over 20 years and have a good understand what constitutes a
user friendly interface.
The 7400 also will not allow you to issue a voice command by pressing the
button on the headset if there is a text message that you have not
acknowledged. This is a problem!! I do not care about text messages when I
am driving. If I get a text message while driving, I must open the phone and
acknowledge the text message before I can use the button on the headset to
voice dial. At that time you are much more likely to have an auto accident.
The purpose of a voice interface is *Safety*. This is poor user interface
design, plain and simple.

Put an entry in the phone book for 911, yes, and assign a voice dial entry
for it because as I mentioned, AFAIK, the 7400 doesn't do voice digit dialing.

I'll agree with that. I am a programmer too, and I can't overemphasize the
importance of a good UI.

That sounds similar to what the VoiceSignal-equipped phones do, but I agree
with you that it's not enough.
Voice digit dialing is an awesome feature. I have a friend who has a
Motorola handset on Verizon that has the VS software, and he tried it for
the first time and was pretty impressed.

So you're saying the 7400 *has* VoiceSignal? If so, why didn't Sanyo include
voice digit dialing in the phone's feature set?
