I disinfected the lead and microphone on my cellphone's hands-free
kit. I used neat propanol and, separately, dilute benzalkonium
chloride.
I notice that the plastic on the lead is now quite stiff!
Which of my cleaning compounds would have cause this?
JS
DETAILS: my hands free is a genuine Nokia part.

I can't tell you what plastic is used for the lead but I think
someone could make a good guess.

What was the BAC diluted IN? If water, then it is not the
cause.
The propanol can remove surface oils, etc, which might
make the lead a little harder.

That's a common problem, but these items are not formulated
to last. They have to be degradable (Thank the green ****s for
that.) So, your problem may have occurred even without your
cleaning. -- Your n-C3H7OH (or IPA) may have leached out the
plasticizers if the matrix was PVC. However there are so many,
many soft/pliable plastics formulations [1] on the market it could
be almost anything: ABS, Urethanes, etc.
Check google for [1] or e-mail Nokia's customer service with your
issue. They might send you a new one for free. Good luck.

ahahaha... AHAHAHA...ahaha.... Does that placate your yearnings?
But if you have issues or an attitude problem over or with what I have
said then address your concerns to the greenies, especially to the
class 3 enviros. Are you one of them? ... Here is a reorientation, for
your benefit, dude, because whenever I post the combination of
"AHAHAHA... ahahaha.." and "Green" it causes a lot of people
to fall into a severe state of a "green guilt by association". They
then get depressed over the self-discovery that they belong to
the lowly enviro class 3. ... Then they get mad and promptly and
predictably do turn against me.... as if it was me that caused them
to have turned into little green idiots.... AHAHAHAHA... Worse,
even more humiliated and irate do they get when they realize
that they've ****ed themselves, and that I am laughing at them.

The benzalkonium chloride was diluted in water. Probably 1 to 10 or
so. It is a mild detergent but maybe the propanol removed oils which
were not just on the surface.

There is no need to obsess about germs to that extreme. Neat organic
solvents are just not appropriate for cleaning household items. It is
most likely the propanol leached the plasticizers out of the thing. In
fact I can't think of any good reason to use solvent or super strong
disinfectants on that. Cleansing wipes you can buy at a grocery store
should have been all you need.
