Build a waveguide directional antenna like these:
http://flakey.info/antenna/waveguide/ http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/448 http://www.drivebywifiguide.com/TetraBrikHowTo.htm http://www.bawia.org/antennas.html
Tigerdirect.com has them prebuilt, if you like:

Of course, in the United States, we make anything illegal that you don't
have to pay to use:

but we ignore it. They can't arrest everyone.
And, of course, we Americans need a good "shootout" to find out who has
the best braggin' rights:

This is a great article with lots of different kinds of wifi antennas.
To find out what's available in your area, download the free Network
Stumbler scanner software from:
http://www.stumbler.net/
Net Stumbler driven around in your car, or even walked or biked around
finds an amazing number of open systems noone has ever even changed the
default password on. You can connect and use any of them that aren't
password protected, the ones Net Stumbler finds without a lock icon.
Most all hotels now have open internet access. I just drive into their
parking lots to check my email a few times a day. Big hotel chains have
REAL broadband, not some toy cellphone system that acts like dialup for
$70/month. You don't need a password, just click on them to logon. My
wireless interface automatically connects to my favorite ones I've saved
in it. 54Mbps wireless with 3-5Mbps internet speed is normal...(c; If
anyone asks, tell them you're in room 212.
Our city, Charleston, South Carolina USA, is putting up free wifi links
like this one:
http://www.dis.anl.gov/is/wireless_802.htm
all over the downtown area. Free is 110kbps capped. You can buy more
from them, which is how they intend to pay for its upkeep. Free works
great for email and looking things up.
For more drastic measures, go to google.com and put:
wifi repeaters
into the search engine...(c;
I know someone with a pringle's can antenna that can access my wifi
station from over a km away.
