Tracfone: I HAVE to have Nokia 2126??

Lost my phone while Geocaching, getting to be a pretty expensive hobby.

"That's okay," I think. "I was getting tired of my old Nokia 5100
anyways. I'd much rather have one of the new flip-phones." They used
to be available off the web, or at Wal-Mart, last I checked....

So I go to Wal-Mart, and they have only one available. RRR....fine,
I'll go buy one off the 'net. 10 or 12 different models, I pick one I
like. Have to punch in zip code, then it TELLS ME WHAT I CAN HAVE.
ONE choice, a Nokia 2126. I THINK that's all Wal-Mart had, too!!

Seems most people here despise Tracfones, but I don't mind 'em. I
almost never use it, so it's real cheap. But why do I have only one
choice of model? I'm in a digital service area. There used to be at
least four models available, why only one now? They claim the 2126 is
the newest model....

They even have my old 5100 still listed as a model they sell, but not
in my area!!

Anyone know what's up here? Guess I'm headed back to Wal-Mart
tomorrow.....

Mike, I use TracFone(s) myself, and I don't know the
answer to your question.

They use to offer CDMA and GSM models where
I live (upstate south carolina), but for the last several
months only the GSM models are shown for my zip.

But I can go to Kmart and find the Motorola C343, which
is the TriMode CDMA model.

Technically, any model that is shown on your TracFone
coverage map for your zipcode can be activated in your
zipcode. Finding the models listed on the coverage
map pages locally is the challenging part.

You might try shopping on the web for the model you
want, as long as it is listed on the TracFone coverage
map for your zip code.

Hope this makes sense.

Eh, I think the maps are all wonky at the moment.

I live in Nebraska, and every NE zip I type in shows Omaha, NE only!

RRRRRrrrr......

The issue is not about despising them, the issue is that there are other
prepaid options for extremely low usage that are a better deal.

For example, on PagePlus, it's basically $30 per year ($10 every four
months) for CDMA/AMPS coverage on the Verizon network. In most cases the
coverage will be far better than what you'll get on any GSM network.

With PagePlus there are none of these endless promotions to deal with in
order to get the best price per minute.

Tracfone is trying to move everyone to GSM as it's more profitable for
them, so you're lucky that in your area you can still get CDMA. There
must not be good GSM service in your area.

I just looked at tracfone, and it is ridiculously expensive, plus it
seems to have some pretty crummy phones.
Major carriers have nicer phones for less money and sell the time for
less.

Does the AMPS coverage actually work. I thought no one was
activating new AMPS phones anymore.
