What CDMA phones?

What is the real scoop on what phones can be used with a given
provider?

We have US Cellular (No other provider covers the areas we need covered)
which uses CDMA. We would like to update our phone, but the USCC
selection is rather restrictive. I would have thought that we could buy
any CDMA phone (ebay, ect) and USCC could configure it to work with our
plan.

They say no, that we have to select one of the 'branded' phones that
they supply. Is this really the case or are they just trying to sell
phones?

Many carriers, like Sprint, will only activate phones they originally sold.
I've never lived in a USCC service area, so I've never been a USCC customer
and can't say if this is the case for that company.
