TriBand Phones

In my ongoing search for a cell phone that will work throughout rural Maine I
have been told that GSM phones can operate on various frequencies and not all
of them are able to switch automatically I am led to believe that Maine
operates on a lower frequency level and that one needs a GSM phone that can
do this. Is this true?
