I still think the Consumer phones are probably locked to Cingular, since
I doubt they've gone to the trouble of setting up their own locking
system and matching SIMs. (But I could certainly be wrong!)

I thinks so- however, you might have other problems- T-Mo's phones are
also locked- to T-Mo. In addition, while Nokias have been easy to unlock
online for free, the new version of the 6030 isn't unlockable that way (I
know- I have two of them.)
What you might want to do, BEFORE you cancel your Cingular service, is to
call Cingular and request the unlock codes for your current phones (at
least one with a phone book memory.) Just tell them you're going to
Mexico and want to use a local SIM there.
Then, you can copy the SIM phonebook to the phone, stick the T-Mo SIM in
the unlocked Cingular phone and copy them back to the T-Mo SIM.
T-Mo will give you the unlock code for your new phone, but not until
you've been with them 90 days- a long time to be without your contacts.

what needs to be done to have my Cingular # ported over to my new T
phone. No biggie. If I need a spare, for whatever reason, I did get my
older Nokia 5190 unlocked. Although that only has a SIMS memory for its'
contacts. As long I have a spare, that's fine. And if I ever had to buy
another, the price for my Samsung T209 was very reasonable 59.99 with an
instant 40.00 rebate.
I think that I am going to be quite satisfied. As an occasional user,
that 100.00 Gold card could very well last me the year. Then with the
initial costs of the phone, accessories, done, the next years calling
would equate to about $9.00/mo, which is half of what I paid for my
Cingular employee plan, with just those ten minutes/mo.

I do the same thing with tracfone. I think when I reupped I got
450 minutes for 99 dollars. That is 22 cents a minute which looks
high but it suits my usage.
I guess the only thing which could upset my apple cart is if Tracfone
went belly-up. I don't know if I'd lose my invested money or not.
