Congratulations, Mark, on your AMPS project. You remind me of a friend
of mine in the paging business back when AMPS was new and IMTS was on its
way out.

One of his paging buddies handed him a 4-channel IMTS system on VHF.
Just for fun, he applied for and got an IMTS license for one of his 500'
towers and installed it, most probably because the phone company was
abandoning IMTS so there was nothing on the IMTS band. Carphone were
free, especially if you uninstalled them from the nicest cars..(c;

It was on the air until he discontinued the paging business. I had one
in my car, left over from paying for IMTS for years. From 500', range
was about 80 miles to the most powerful IMTS carphones.

I'd sure like to see someone take up the slack and get AMPS licenses
after the big guns abandon it in 2008. There's still room, especially in
the country, for a AMPS system that works over longer distances than 2
miles.
