Carlos Slim Helu, (currently the 3rd richest man on the planet Earth with
an esimated worth of $49 Billion, just a few bucks shy of Bill Gates and
Warren Buffet's $56 and $52 bil, respectively) bought CompUSA in 2000.
(I believe his son is currently in charge of day-to-day operations.)

Helu owns the Mexican telecom giant Telmex, and held a pretty large stake
in MCI until he sold it off a few years ago, IIRC.

Not too shabby for a Mexican, huh? (Sarcasm obviously not pointed at
you, Notan, but at the earlier bigoted comments.)

When you think of how the computer retail business has taken a beating
since the computer has become a commodity available at Walmart and K-Mart-
type stores, the fact that CompUSA still exists with 120+ stores staying
open is pretty incredible- who's their closest computer-only competitor?
Microcenter and their fifteen or so stores?

Just curious... what Canadian church feels the need to save the poor
souls of Oklahoma? ("Well, we were going to do Mission work in the
Congo, but then we figured, like, Tulsa was a lot closer, eh?") ;-)

Do I need to name all of the major national retailers that have annouced
store closings in the last year? Or would making the general statement
that many have done so be good enough?

Or I could simply point out that your status as a bigot is archived for all
to see.

It has nothing to do with the race of the owner, but CompUSA has done
very poorly. In any area with any competition, they lose. If there's a
nearby MicroCenter, CompUSA closes. If there's a nearby Fry's, CompUSA
closes. I've been to a very busy CompUSA in San Bruno, where there are
no other computer stores in the vicinity. That store is not closing, but
all the stores in San Jose/Silicon Valley will close.

Stupid.

My guess is that CompUSA positions themselves as a computer "convenience"
store, rather than a big-discounter like Fry's or Microcenter, both of
whom have a very small number of stores compared to CUSA.

Sure, they're closing over 100 stores, but that still leaves them with
more than their competition. CompUSA wouldn't be the first retailer that
discovered they grew too quickly and oversaturated some of their markets.

Well, with this much evidence, I'm convinced.
