foad,
That's funny :-) Really! And you are right about commercial spam.
I responded to the spammers so I could change the obscene subject
header so my friends in alt.yoga and I would not have to look at them.
You see we yoga types are very sensitive :-)
But there is a difference when responding to a spammer versus a
troll. The troll reads the response and very likely will increase his
posting to groups objecting to his posts. There in lies the danger and
the threat that the troll holds over others.
A google search produces 106,000 hits on Dr. Jai Maharj. There are
dedicated sites detailing his prolific usenet activities.

This guy has attained a reputation as one of usenet's most egregious
spammers/trolls. The bitterly ironic (hypocritical) notion here is
that in the guise of advancing an understanding and appreciation of
the Hindus, he is on a grand scale, abusing some of the most
reasonable, inclusive and educated people in the world; the denizens
of usenet.
If I were a space alien looking on from a distance at some of these
misplaced posts, I might draw the conclusion that this person
disrespects the Hindus and is doing everything possible to drive a
wedge between them and the other major religions in this world.
A hater is a hater and no matter what the words, no matter what the
presentation and all that a hater can produce is hate.
The main motivation of most people is fear. It has been this way
throughout man's existence. This is in fact the purpose of our being
(here) to transcend (let go of) our fear. Man(kind) has made huge
strides and continues to move towards knowledge of the Truth of who he
is, one individual at a time. But as is so clearly evident with the
advent of the internet and global communication, fear still holds
sway. Hatred, persecution, violence, perversion and all the myriad
forms of the illusion of separation still reign supreme. But knowing
and seeing this clearly will allow us to accept and adjust our
behaviors if we have the courage and substance to choose to do so.
There are vast improvements. Large pockets of people willing to live
and let live, trying to understand, motivated to institutionalize the
respect and acceptance of all persons. This I believe is the
historical destiny of the United States and why I believe it was the
US which established the internet. The internet is the tool the
Universe will use to advance the human race in it's next jump towards
it's Divine nature. A major jump. Perhaps the greatest.
I know that nothing I post in these groups will have much effect on
any spammer or troll. Far better posters than me have tried and
failed. I know they say the best policy is to ignore haters/spammers.
But keeping one's mouth shut can be a problem. I have personally
witnessed the gradual erosion of the freedoms on which the United
States was predicated, and seen an entire population turned into
economic slaves for the benefit of "the haves". The grandest
experiment in freedom ever put forth on this planet is being killed in
favor of the fear of it's participants. In part because those who see
the damage are unwilling to open their mouths (and wallets) and
object.
But thanks for responding anyway. Your points are well taken and
funny :-)
Jared
