SIM responsible for crashing phones?

With both my previous and my current cell phone, I experience
occasional 'crashes' of my phone. The phone just suddenly switches
off. At first I suspected that the phone itself was becoming old and
showing some problems, but my new phone shows the same problem
(although a little less frequent). I wonder if I just happen to have
bad quality phones, or if it might be a problem with the SIM card. Is
it possible that the SIM card causes the phones to switch off suddenly?
