With them no longer being enclosed from roadside noise, they're
virtually useless for actual conversations, but still they're
useful for emergencies. For example, in late 2003 I was on a hiking
trail when an emergency situation arose, and I had to walk back to
where I knew a payphone was located and call 911. If not for that
payphone, I'd have to walk an additional distance all the way to
home to get to my own phone before calling 911.
