ALLTEL SHUTS DOWN BLUETOOTH...

Read elsewhere about my buggy moto E815's poor internet service
dropping data calls left and right. The E815 firmware sucks.

Alltel has replaced my E815 with three phones, ending up this
morning with a new ROKR for $150 more money.

Here's the TRUTH AS I FOUND IT.....
ALLTEL HAS SHUT DOWN ALL BLUETOOTH ACCESS EXCEPT HEADSETS AND
HANDSFREE ON ALL NEW ALLTEL PHONES....

The story ends this morning....

I entered Alltel's Local store at 9AM and informed, politely as I
could, that the Samsung I got yesterday wasn't going to work,
then, after calling Her Immenseness, our manager, we got a
blessing for "ONLY ONE MORE PHONE SWAP" to the Motorola ROKR. It
will cost me about $60 next month for the "Upgrade" as they took
back the Samsung, gave me credit for the defective product E815
who's Bluetooth WORKED WITH MY DUN.....then washed their hands of
me warning this was the last phone I was going to trade out.

The ROKR, the latest and greatest Alltel has paired very
successfully with the Nokia N800. I paired from the Nokia
because the ROKR ONLY HAS FACILITIES TO PAIR WITH
HEADSETS/HANDSFREE! This should have been my FIRST indication of
trouble. Look for yourselves....only headsets and handsfree
Bluetooth.

The ROKR popped up a window saying a Nokia N800 wanted to pair
and I said YES. THEN, another window popped up saying a Nokia
N800 was asking for DUN internet access and did I want to accept
or reject...I picked ACCEPT! THE MOTOROLA ROKR SUPPORTS AND
ACCEPTS THE DUN ACCESS REQUEST OF THE NOKIA N800. (Keep this in
mind...because it ain't gonna happen any more!)

Now, note that my N800 tablet DID have access through the
defective E815 phone to Alltel over Bluetooth DUN....I have pages
of data access on my bill to prove it to hizzoner during the
court proceedings. And, note that the new Moto ROKR DOES have
DUN capabilities and DID accept my request for DUN access to the
internet through the ROKR's DUN profile, pairing successfully.
You can see it both on the ROKR's list of paired devices and on
the Nokia's BT devices pairing list. If you open the ROKR's
pairing from the N800's list, it lists successful pairing via
DUN, OPP and FTP. (The ROKR doesn't support SPP.)

BUT....and I want everyone you know to know this....ALLTEL HAS
SHUT DOWN ALL BLUETOOTH ACCESS TO ALL ITS PHONES EXCEPT FOR
HEADSETS AND HANDSFREE DEVICES.....AND WILL NOT TURN THEM BACK
ON.

Alltel Data Support blamed Motorola for turning it off in
response to the goddamned ringtone business. Motorola's software
department, and I talked to them DIRECTLY this morning for over
an hour, said this is a lie. ALLTEL turned it all off, as did
all the other carriers SELLING RINGTONES....which makes lots more
sense! Motorola and the other manufacturers providing DUN and
other BT profiles on their equipment could give a **** less about
ringtone sales....CARRIERS SELL RINGTONES and would do anything
short of killing their mothers to prevent you from sharing what
they sell! Does that make more sense to you?...(c;

SO, I WENT FROM INTERMITTENT SELLULAR INTERNET SERVICE DUE TO THE
E815'S BUGGY FIRMWARE....TO NO SELLULAR INTERNET SERVICE WITH A
BRAND NEW MOTOROLA ROKR FROM ALLTEL'S OWN STORE.

Internet over bluetooth has been shut down, quite successfully if
I can't find a hack for it....where I'm going now....(c;

Goddamn them all....sure wish my business didn't depend on this
SELLular for its phone service or I'd get off Sellular for good!

My tablet still works great on wifi....and there's more wifi
everywhere. WiMax is coming....(c;

So what's the difference between Internet access via a cable and Internet
access via bluetooth?

They still do phone-as-modem via a cable, right?

Or do they?

ONLY if you use their "connection kit", which probably includes a
hobbling up program like Verizon uses to prevent pass throughs
and multiple connections.

I've put out some messages on the cellphone forums trying to find
a hack.

Screw all the SELLular companies is my current position. I hope
the NY attorney general has all their sorry asses.

PROBLEM SOLVED! I stumbled, headlong, into using the Nokia N800
file manager, with the bluetooth still paired to the ROKR, to
look at the ROKR's microSD card over the Bluetooth FTP. IT
CONNECTED! The ROKR's 2GB card out of my Sansa MP3 player was
displayed on the N800's file manager. I could even copy and move
files both ways. N800 treated it like a Bluetooth external disk
drive...(c;

Well, lo and behold! The instant the phone connected to the N800
file manager, the phone beeped and connected the DUN call to the
net! The phone was set to ignore the DUN call, but it seems to
have had a change of heart, now that its pregnant with my Nokia
tablet's data baby via FTP. Ever since stumbling onto this
phenomenon (oversight? bug?...etc.), when the Nokia is booting
up with BT to PHone autoconnect set to on, the ROKR responds
instantly to the call, even before the N800 has booted up past
the initial picture screens! By the time the home page appears,
we're ALREADY on the net....with MUCH BETTER EVDO access than the
E815 EVER provided.

I also noted the phone says [EV] on its status display, not the
1XATT icon with the little antenna symbol the other phone did.
Streaming and viewing webpages at the same time doesn't break up
the stream at all!

ROKR Z6M, once you get over this initial hurdle, has really
gotten my attention.

Now that I have a more stable EVDO platform, I've repurchased
AXcess TV from MobiTV but am quite disappointed with its software
on the ROKR. The camera software, by default, goes into FULL
SCREEN landscape mode to take pictures on the 2M pixel camera.
MobiTV's ROKR version DOES NOT! The picture is TINY! It only
has portrait mode with the picture taking up about 40% of the
available screen space. I'm calling MobiTV tomorrow to find out
if there's a way to get it in FULL SCREEN mode to fill the nice
widescreen display the camera software shows clearly that
landscape mode IS available....Mobi just doesn't support it.

NEXT BATTLE IS JUST BEGINNING!.....(c;

I'm much happier with the upgrade today than when I posted my
anger. "NO" has never been too acceptable to me.....

Re: ALLTEL SHUTS DOWN BLUETOOTH...

If you haven't noticed yet, CDMA/BREW/QUALCOMM are all synonymouse for
"let's make more money".

While it is possible to have BREW and Java co-exist, most service
providers would rather stick soley with BREW because there are (more
or less) no free applications available for BREW.

I suppose I cannot blame service providers for trying to make money.
Duh! Why do they call it capitalism afterall.

In any case, in a lot of low cost BT phones the majority of BT
protocols will be left out just to keep the cost down. BT chips that
soley support wireless headsets and perhaps vCard exchange are cheaper
than those also accepting OBEX or other options. On the other hand, in
some phones those protocols are just disabled via software, in which
case crafty customers usually find a way to enable them.

I resolved the problem when I did an FTP connect with the Nokia
N800's File Manager to the MotoROKR Z6M's microSD card to move
some files around. As soon as the phone answered the FTP call
from the N800 tablet...it immediately answered the call for DUN
service for internet from the tablet. It has answered the call
ever since, and I haven't the foggiest idea why. There may be a
bug in ROKR's firmware.

Alltel called me, again, yesterday, to ask if I had resolved the
problem or had just given up as they hadn't heard from me in over
a week. I told Data Support what happened and that I was, once
again, a happy camper. The frustration level I was at when I
posted this was very high as SELLphone companies all want nothing
to do with external devices they can't sell something to or
control. You're just on your own from the minute you mention
your external device, pretty much. I cancelled the trouble
ticket, again, and thanked him for the call.

Does your SELLphone company tech support call you? Mine never
did before Alltel...(c;
