What's special about the RIM Blackberry?

I've seen a lot in the press about the Blackberry. What distinguishes
it from similar systems?

Email. Blackberries do email better than any other device made. Rim has
developed a complete network for email that is unrivaled. With a GSM
blackberry you will receive your email within minutes of it being sent in
almost any country in the world.

Huh...why do you need a separate network for email?

Isn't this also true of the many other push email systems available today,
such as directmail for exchange or the IMAP servers that support IMAP IDLE?
AFAIK the only thing that distinguishes BSE is that it can push changes to
contacts or calendar entries in addition to pushing email.

While this is nominally true, from what I have seen, the push email is
still a ways from working as well as the blackberry service. Push email
does have an advantage in that it is not dependant on an extra layer of
networking. But, it still seems to me that in most cases blackberries
work better, and are usually easier to configure.
