One of my unfortunate friends has an iPhone stuck on ATT...

I was showing him the Nokia SU-8W Bluetooth keyboard I bought to
improve actual typing on the Nokia N800 Linux tablet.
Touchscreen typing and "writing" is a joke, no matter what device
    you buy. It sux.

He agreed with me the onscreen keyboarding on the iPhone was even
worse because the finger keyboard is even smaller than N800's.
On either device sending a long email or any message like this on
is a painfully slow lesson in agony.

"Can I try using your keyboard with the iPHone?", he begged,
without getting on his knees. I turned on the Nokia keyboard
which always puts it in discovery mode until something connects
with it. The iPhone COULDN'T SEE IT! What the hell? iPhone, a
typing internet device doesn't support HID profile for
    keyboards??

To test the keyboard with an Apple, he got his Mac notebook out
of his car and booted it. The Mac paired with the keyboard and
after I put in the LONG Mac paring code, it paired right up. I
could type on the Mac from 40' away from the tiny keyboard.

We tried again, to no avail, to get the iPhone to pair with it so
we could use the keyboard, instead of the tiny touchscreen
    keyboard. No go.

Anyone know how to get an iPhone with the latest firmware
upgrade, but not hacked, to pair with an HID (Human Interface
Device) like bluetooth keyboards, or is this another denied
feature?? Any help and instructions greatly appreciated. When
iPhone searched for BT devices, it didn't even report the MAC of
the keyboard like the Mac did before properly identifying it as a
Nokia SU-8W keyboard. The Mac had trouble identifying it, too,
even though the keyboards manufacturer and model number WERE
RIGHT ON THE MAC SCREEN! I had to send the Mac the keys to the
left and right of the two shift keys for it to identify the Nokia
as a standard compliant ASCII keyboard. How stupid. It doesn't
    seem to have a list!

We haven't tried other HID keyboards on the iPhone, yet.

The iPhone keyboard is unique enough that a first time trial reveals
    zero.

One has to use it for a week to fully evaaluate it, and the
overwhelming majority of folks that do quickly learn how
to eficiently use it and after a few days have no problems with it.

To write a review after 30 minutes with it is foolish.

Huh?? What the hell are you smokin'?

I tried to pair my Nokia SU-8W Bluetooth HID external keyboard
with an iPhone and the iPhone refused to see it. I don't have to
"evaaluate (sic) it". It's mine! I was trying to find someone
who know how to pair them or if the iPhone supported HID
    interface over Bluetooth at all.

Hello?? Anyone at home in there??

We don't hate it. At least, I don't. It's a fun, but way
overpriced toyphone to sell services with that others get for
    free.

What I don't condone is the marketing behind it making the

I call it the WebTV of the PDA set. That's pretty accurate....

At this point in time, the iPhone's BT is mono-headset only. No stereo
headphones, serno BT GPS or keyboards, and no tethering.

No matter- if Apple didn't include it, you don't need it- at least
    according to Oxford...

Someone pointed us to a scathing PC Magazine review they did on
the iPhone. I read it. One of their negative points was it
didn't support Bluetooth keyboards, at all, so you were forced to
type on the tiny screen, rendering it fairly useless for typing
    long messages......amoung other faults.

So you get data for free? It's the only service beside voice that I pay
    for. A whopping $20.

Yeah, yeah. The idea of having either an external keyboard or one of
those goofy pull-out ones doesn' do it for me.

All your sarcasm aside, what are you currently using that has the iPhone
so trumped in both price and functionality?

    You won't like it. Nokia N800 w/Nokia SU-8W BT keyboard. I just
wish it had JAVA support. Maybe soon. It runs Opera 8 and a new
version of Mozilla Firefox for a browser on its 800 x 480 screen.

Garnet just released their Palm virtual machine for it adding
thousands of Palm programs to its functionality, if I want it. I
sync'd the virtual machine on it to my Palm Desktop over the wifi
link provided. Glad I didn't buy a palm phone. That would be
    redundant.

It hasn't been boring since I got it a few months ago. Nearly
every day there's something new posted to play with on it,
something different. It's an amazing piece of work.

By the way, after reading PC Mag's review, they said iPhone has
no HID support, so the more functional external keyboard is out,
which answered my question as to why we couldn't find it on the
iPhone's device list to pair it.

I'd hardly call it "scathing." It seemed pretty on the mark- an intriguing
    device wit
    a couple of shortcomings.

    > I read it. One of their negative points was it
    > didn't support Bluetooth keyboards, at all, so you were forced to

I'm not always impressed by their reviews, anyway, since the individual
reviwer's biases often poke through. I remember when they reviewed my
current phone (an HTC Wizard, sold by T-Mo as the "MDA.") They reviwed
itand it's identical Cingular clone (same "Wizard" sold by the then-
Cingular as the "8125." Despite being the same phone, one review called it
unimpressive, slow and with lousy voice quality, and the other praised it's
sound quality and peppiness despite it's slow 200MHz processor, and called
it one of the best WinMo phones released to date!

I imagine that ten PC Mag reviewers would've written ten different reviews,
skewed by their personal wants and needs in a device.

Take your current "disbelief" that you can't hookup a BT keyboard.
Personally it's a non-issue to ME since I'm not going to schlep an external
keyboard to use with a 4-inch device. Call me crazy, but I prefer a
device's accessories to be SMALLER than the device itself! Having said
that, I don't think leaving out bluetooth support for ANYTHING is a good
idea- adding it would've cost comparitively nothing, and if it makes a few
curmudgeons happy, what's the harm? Besides, who knows what useful BT
devices that third party could create that might use the generic HID
driver? Hell, on the WinMo newsgroups there was a programmer not too long
ago that was going to rig a depth finder to his WinMo phone via BT, and
write some custom fish-finding GPS app for it!

So, how do we get it to pair with the HID keyboards, any of them?
Any help doing so would be greatly appreciated, especially by my

I have no problem with your enthusiasm (they do build these with a
market in mind), certainly doesn't trump the iPhone for me. Right away
the thing wouldn't serve me because it's too damn big.

Keep an eye on the iPhone hacker forums and blogs to see if anyone outside

Yeah, I looked. Seems hardware based problem. Funny, the Macs
pair with it fine...then they have to test it by pressing the
keys just inboard of the shift keys to see what keyboard it is
EVEN THOUGH the make and model number of the keyboard is there at
    the pairing....crazy computer.
