Hi.
Is there a web site that rates _unlocked_ GSM phones? (Quality, ease of
use, bandwidths used, battery life, PRICES...)
I am looking for an impartial site, rather than one that concentrates on
specific brands.
I live in Texas and do some traveling in Europe.
Thanks.

Re: Unlocked GSM Cell Phone
I think the last Consumer Reports had an article on phones but you still may
have to do some research on the manufacturers and provider web sites to get
all the info you want. Check the CR mag. out in the library. We just
bought a Mot. V195 from T-Mobile which is good on battery life, a world
phone and got it on T-Mobile web site for $40 as prepaid. We don't use use
many minutes so buy 1000 min. for $100 and that lasts us all year then can
roll over what's not used for as little as $10 for another year. You can
probably buy a sim card for use over seas.

I'm gonna check into this as well as I supposedly
already have an unlocked GSM phone with current
carrier. But want to try T-Mobile prepaid

If you already have an unlocked GSM phone, you can buy a T-Mobile
pre-paid SIM card with 10 minutes of time on it for $10.

It shows up as "out of stock" at the moment for some reason.

Re: Unlocked GSM Cell Phone
I concur. The V195 on tmobile's prepaid site for $39 is a good deal for
a basic quadband. I actually bought 2 of these earlier this year as
backups. (Got the unlock codes from tmobile right away). They also came
with $25 topup credit each. Plus tmobile will unlock it after 90 days of
service in good standing.

Great idea!!
I can buy one and try it and 'see" if it is truly
unlocked and will work on the T-Mobile system then,
correct?

Exactly. I have a T-Mobile branded Motorola V195 which I used on
Netcom Norway's network. Before it was unlocked, it would ask for the
subsidy code (which I didn't have then) when I inserted the Netcom
SIM; now, it just works.

Well the unlocked GSM phone I have is NOT one that was
used on the T-Mobile network.... instead it's a small
local GSM system here in Illinois called Simmetry. see

Do you think it will still work on T Mobile network as
I'm wanting to change carriers.

That's what being unlocked is all about. If it's really unlocked and
it operates on the right bands, then yes.
A few things won't work automatically, like one-button access to voice
mail, since T-Mobile has the info preloaded into their phones.

....in which case you just directly dial the voicemail number, (805) MESSAGE
(805-637-7243).

OK thanks
Maybe its just bets to go ahead and get the $39 package
phone and pre-paid card deal then?

A parady of a Hank Willimans song comes into my head "Take
these chains from my phone and set me free "

I had no problems with my Cingular Nokia 6340i (unlocked with
the one button voicemail access. The VM number is in my sim card and
it works right off the bat.

Or, you can automate the entire logon process by dialing your own
SELLphone number, followed by a couple of pauses (pp on
Motorolas) then your access code....all in line in your
autodialer. I call mine "***** box" for the voice dialer...(c;
8435551212pp8392834
^^^^cell number
Is the number it dials. When the system has the first 10
numbers, it connect the voicemail during the two pauses, then the
phone dumps 8392834 as a touchtone audio to activate the security
code. No hands needed. "Call *****box"
Alltel makes you press 1 to hear your new messages, instead of
just dumping them to you when you are validated, so I added ppp1
to the end of the number to automate that process
8435551212pp8392834ppp1
Three pauses gives the computer time to prompt me to press 1 to
hear my messages...which I still think is stupid.
This is a Motorola phone. All Motorolas use this p for pause.
