Oops....there needs to be a correction. These games are NOT "installed"
on your iPhone. They are just browser-based games played on the iPhone
browser. iPhones don't "install games", or anything else, so we can SELL
you something.
To see the difference, go to:
http://maemo.org/downloads/OS2007/games/
and
http://maemo.org/downloads/OS2008/games/
for the Nokia Linux tablets. To INSTALL the games, which require no
airtime or data connection after installation, you simply click the green
arrow, which downloads the .install files to the tablet and runs the
install procedure, complete with any data libraries necessary. There are
also emulators so you can run gameware from other systems on the tablet
like Xmaeme and ScummVM, virtual machines that allow the tablet to run
game cart programs.
It may take a while for an iPhone owner to get acclimated to open source
software, but they usually get the hang of DOWNLOADING and INSTALLING
software for free in short order. We've just had a free major upgrade
from Maemo Linux OS2007 to Maemo Linux OS2008 for the N800 second
generation tablets from Nokia, who tries to keep its customers by not
alienating them when major new upgrades occur, in hopes, of course, that
they'll also want the new hardware the company is selling. Many N800
owners just couldn't stand it and had to have that slideout keyboard, but
the upgraded N800 will run all the N810 OS2008 software, too. I'm
sticking with the N800, myself, as it has 16GB of storage on SD cards,
not 8GB on microSD cards (N810) and I already own a Nokia folding BT
keyboard, far superior to the thumb keyboard entry. I'm typing on it for
this message over rdesktop from a wifi-equipped diner to the XP box at
home.
Four nice games are installed in the operating systems for the tablets
from Nokia. I like Chess, but I'd rather play with a human who screws
up, rather than the damned computer that's miles ahead of my moves making
me look just awful. Quetoo is great fun for the Quake experts....which
doesn't include me, either. I'm still working on learning the 57
solitaire games from Aisleriot, which has yet to be ported to the new OS.
I'm hoping it will be ported very soon as I don't see how they can
improve on its operation. Again, real cards is sometimes better.
Computer solitaire games won't let you cheat....dammit.
Dump iPhone and get a nice tiny Bluetooth toyphone you can hold to your
ear without everyone laughing and a new N800 or N810 tablet with real
speakers and INSTALLABLE SOFTWARE. Much better YOU control what's
installed than "them"......(c;
