Choosing Your New Number?

I've been told it's no longer possible to specify any or all of a new
phone number. Anyone have any tricky ways to somehow choose or
otherwise specify part of a new phone number? Don't cellular
providers reserve numbers by blocks and have some way of knowing which
are available?

Any ideas?

Thx!

Mark

I just call the operator and ask if the number I want is vacant. If it is, I
asked them to reserv the number for me.

No problems.

Have you done that and been able to actually get that number?

2 years ago, I didn't have a problem getting a number in the area code I
wanted, but I was asked for a valid zip code in the area code's coverage to
accomplish the assignment. You might think that's not much, but I live in
Southern California where we have more than a dozen AC's. I didn't care to
specify the prefix or the last 4 digits - just the AC and area where the
prefix's central office was.
