Even my old Motorola V195 has a few games and functions I might want to
use if I'm desperately bored on a flight, but there's no way to turn off
    the radio.

Do newer non-PDA phones have a "flight mode" so that you can use their
cameras, MP3 players and the like while airborne?

Several do, like my wife's Nokia 5300 XpressMusic and my Nokia 6133. On the
other hand, both of our phones are also MP3 players, which probably played in
to Nokia's decision to implement flight mode...

I just picked up a cheap Samsung A437 for my son (games, camera, but no MP3
player) and was stunned to see it did have a flght mode!

Some do, some have a half-assed approach, some have nothing. Sony, for
example, allows minimal media player functionality, but no PIM,
Calendar, photos, camera, or other functionality.

Good luck trying to explain the concept of "flight mode" to your
    friendly flight attendant...

Why do you say that? My phone as flight mode and I have never had any
trouble at all with using it on a plane.

Did they ask you to turn it off and were OK after you told them you had
flight mode enabled? My experience with flight attendants is, they have
their rules, the rule is "no cellphones" and - flight mode or not - they
keep insisting you turn it off.

This might depend on the airline, but I've actually been asked "is that
set to flight mode?" on AA. This was on what she thought was an iPhone
(actually an iPod Touch -- Which does have wifi, so the question was
    valid)

It's much better in the last year or so- on the last few flights I've been
on, they even mention "flight mode" in the pre-flight "rules speech."

I have never even been asked about it and I am positive that several
attendants have seen that I was using a cell phone to listen to music.
