Can somebody who knows comment on developing mobile phone
    alternatives?

Sounds like long-term, VOIP over whatever network type (WiFi or
WiMax?) may supplant GSM cell phone services.

    Plausible?

Is WinMax just another pay-to-play WiFi network?

I doubt it- VoIP is not as spectrally efficient as GSM or CDMA, so I
suspect if VoIP over 3G/4G/whatever makes a play, "standard" voice service
will be priced to be competitive . Who a year ago, or even six months ago
saw unlimited $100 voice plans coming?

You don't think it it's going to be free, do you? ;-)

WiMax is a 4G wireless technology that Sprint is using as it's next-gen
data network. Other carriers are choosing other technologies. Despite
Larry's excitement, there's nothing earth-shatteringly magical about WiMax.
