iPhone Keyboard substandard?

Some people are saying, including Dvorak himself, that the iPhone touch keyboard just doesn't cut it saying that 'people are going to return the phone in drives'. Can the keyboard keep up with the fast typing that most of us are used to on our smartphones with actual buttons? Will an accessory keyboard be necessary?

Will be interesting to see what happens. When I saw some of the intro vids that showed the screen being used I was a little leery of how the letter/number icons balloned for a second while the typing went on. I think that part is a distraction and might even slow things down (more processing). All they needed to do was make the icon glow, go bold or go more translucent or something for a split second to indcate that it had been selected. Who knows, maybe they allow you to turn that balloning thing off in the settings.

I think this is going to be the biggest downfall for the iPhone.

I've actually changed my opinion on it. When I first saw it I really wasn't all that impressed with it.......partly because I didn't want to lose touch with my senses over another new shiny gadget!

The more I read about it however, the more interesting it's become.

I do think the keyboard leaves a lot to be desired......there's something to be said for a tactile keyboard rather than just touching a screen.

When I was watching the keynote talk by Steve Jobs I watched him as he typed and he was looking at his fingers and then checking the screen. He's obviously used the phone atleast a few times but still, there was that tinge of uncertainty in what had been typed and he did not seem to be able to type without looking at the keyboard.

Also interesting is that he was typing with his index finger rather than thumbing it like a BlackBerry. Memorizing where those keys are with an index finger is going to be tough, let alone doing it with the thumbs.
