I'm either going to buy an ipod touch or an iphone. The ipod touch can connect to wifi free of charge, but can the iphone do this? because i might not be able to pay the monthly internet fee

Re: does the iphone have free wifi?
Well, if you can mange this:
(from iPhone Wifi Tips | Any iPhone)
1) WEP Password. If you are using WEP encryption on your network, you have two choices, WEP Password, or WEP hex or ASCII. Notice the little bar at the top that says “WEP Password” with an arrow next to it. If you are entering the Hexadecimal code for your WEP network, you need to toggle it to “WEP Hex or ASCII”.
2) WEP Hexadecimal Password part 2. Another problem I had, even with the above toggle was it still would not take my code. If you are still having this problem, preface your code with a “$” so you might enter: “$D0EBDEED2101555CF5123AEB56A” This worked for me.
3) WIFI Still Not Working? This was me. My WIFI was still not working. My phone would only use the EDGE network. Fortunately Mav over on EverythingIphone.com was able to create a list of steps that got me working. Very much appreciated Mav.
A) Remove yourself from your Network. Go into your network and select “Forget This Network.”
B) Turn WIFI Off. From them Settings Menu for WIFI, you need to toggle the Blue On Button to the Grey Off Position.
C) Reset/Reboot your Wireless Router. Wait for your Router to fully reboot.
D) Turn WIFI back on, on your iPhone.
E) Re-Connect to your WIFI Network. Re-enter your encryption information as needed.

Re: does the iphone have free wifi?
Awesome, so glad I found this forum. I was so worried about the costs of having the phone racking up, but things like this really help.
Has anyone else tried it and had it work?

Re: does the iphone have free wifi?
Technically No, the EDGE or 3G plans cost $40.
WiFi is always free, but you need to be in range, and somethings need a passcode to access it.
Thed EDGE or 3G is free to access, just pay the company $40, and you should be all set.

Re: does the iphone have free wifi?
I have a new 3G with a 2Wire 1000HW router. Can't connect. iPhone doesn't have selection for WEP Hex/Ascii. At least that I can find. When I set WIFI settings, the home wireless connection shows up, but I have to select "Other..." to get to security settings, and WEP and others show up, but no hex/ascii selection.
Any help?

Re: does the iphone have free wifi?
of course its free. wifi is just a standard wireless lan connection. as long as you know the security keys for a wifi network then you're free to join.
