Question regarding buying an iPhone on Ebay

If I buy an iPhone on Ebay and activate it in my home, can I avoid signing a new contract? Thank you for any help.

I don't think so, unless you buy an unlocked phone. If you buy an unlocked phone, you can buy whatever sim card you want
